So it’s time for prom, finally! I know we are all anxious for the highlight of the year to come. Girls get all dolled up like a princess for the magical evening, and boys can’t wait to see how beautiful their date looks.
The thought of prom makes us all giddy with glee but it can all be a bit stressful. Where to go for dinner, what to wear, and weather or not to rent a limo, there are so many things you need to think of before you can enjoy your magical night with your friends or you significant other.
What you wear on prom night should reflect your personality and you should feel confident and comfortable. Girls should look in magazines to she what kinds of dresses they like. You don’t have to stick with the traditional ballroom dress; you could be wild and funky in a cute cocktail dress, or play it safe in pretty pastel colors. When you go shopping for the dress of your dreams you should take you time and try on dresses you wouldn’t normally pick, remember things look different on the hanger than they do on you so why not be adventurous?
Customarily girls buy a boutonniere for their date. Usually it’s a pin on rose or carnation with baby’s breath to be worn on the right lapel. You and your date could order the boutonniere and the corsage together; some florist could make you a package deal.
Guys, same thing goes for you, wear what’s comfortable for you. You really don’t have many options concerning attire but maybe you could add your own personal touch to stand out in a sea of black tuxes, but keep in mind not to be too crazy. You could rent you tuxedo (which comes with matching shoes) at any tux store. A rental could cost about $50-$150 depending on the extras you get. The fancier, the more expensive.
It’s customary for the guy to get his date a corsage. It can be a pin on type or one she can wear on her wrist, depending on what she feels more comfortable with. You may also want to make sure that the color of the corsage doesn’t clash with the color of your date’s dress.
A limousine is a very expensive optional extra for your prom night. It can be fun for three or four couples to go together to the prom in a limousine, and some do. Just be sure that you want to do this and budget accordingly. The standard cost for a limo for the evening starts around $400. If you split the cost between eight of you, it might be something you would like to do. But be sure to check to see that the limousine service is licensed by the state. Otherwise, there have been many horror stories about limo drivers leaving kids, asking for more money the evening of the prom, or not showing up at all if they get a better fare. Research the references of the service meticulously. Don't be sorry the evening of the prom.
There are many choices as to where you can eat before the prom. It is often fun if you go in groups of two to four couples. If your group is bigger than that, you may have difficulty finding seating in the restaurant of your choice. Be sure that you make a reservation at the restaurant ahead of time. You may want to tell the restaurant at the time you are making your reservations that you are going to your prom after eating, and will need to be served in a timely fashion. Restaurants are usually cooperative if you tell them your needs. In fact, many will try to help you make it a special night. Expense here can also vary dramatically. Often each person pays for his or her own dinner, but again that will depend on your situation. Just remember that Prom Night is expensive, and most students try to split the costs as evenly as possible. Dinner could run anywhere from $10-$25 per person.
