Con Language Geekiness

Apr 17, 2006 00:12

Learned something at the Con. Was babbling randomly with people after a roundtable and ran into a couple of people who knew ASL. Apparently, they report, facial expressions have a grammatical function in the language. The same hand gestures can be interpreted as a statement, a yes/no question, or a broader question of fact, distinguishable only by the facial expression of the signer. As a language geek, I find that incredibly fucking cool. I wonder if ASL has developed to the point that it has accents and dialects yet.

Is it bad that I go to a kink con and my first substantial post about it is a language post? Is it wrong that I found time to sit back and read Teach Yourself Ancient Greek?
