Together...and it was perfect.
"I knew you'd be back." he whispered as he buried his face against her hair. "I knew..." He trailed off, drawing back when she did just to run his fingers through her hair and look his fill.
"There ain't nothin' to forgive." he assured her, then corrected himself with a shrug. "Well...ain't *much.*" His gaze sobered, his eyes narrowing just a little. "You scared the *fuck* out of me at first. If you were just takin' off...you could've told me. I wouldn't have come after you...not if you needed to run."

"Joe... you have no idea how much I want to lie to you right now. I want to tell you that I don't know, that I'm not sure when she sold it, that she wouldn't tell me... but I can't lie to you... not right now."
Eve swallowed hard, realizing that the moment for a happy reunion... for being happy to be home and in his arms had passed her by.
"The day you found her in Lindsey's office... that morning she signed it over to him." She bit her bottom lip, holding it in along with the breath in her lungs as she tensed up waiting for his reaction.

Then he said it, and she knew she'd never move. Her head shook a bit snapping herself out of whatever haze she might have been in, because really that was the only explanation for it.
She wasn't even sure when she had moved, but suddenly she was standing in front of him in near tears, "I told you I was sorry... I just wasn't exactly specific at the time."

"Hey...c'mere." he murmured, reaching up to catch her hand and pull her into his lap, wrapping his arms around her to hold her close. He shifted his head to bury his face against her neck for a moment...breathing in the scent of her, memorizing it...burning every part of her into his soul. He wanted to keep it close...keep *her* close when his time came...
"This ain't on you." he finally whispered, drawing back to look up at her. "It's not...okay? Know it...in your heart and soul, know it."
There was so much left to do. He had to withdraw from all his classes at school...talk to Ezekiel Ellison, make sure he'd look after Eve if there was any backlash...
