[TM] Boston: Things Never Change

Jul 30, 2007 17:54

If Eve was to write up a what I did over my weekend in New York report, she wouldn't have the first clue where to start. Writing up book reports were skills learned in elementary school. Eve never got to put a laminated painbrush with her name on it into the pocket shaped like a bucket to allow her to play with the sandbox. She never got a report ( Read more... )

He was a sorry, pathetic piece of shit. In love, pissed off, fucked up, and heartsick...pathetic. To a degree he'd never live down, and never get shut of ( ... )

The drive over felt automatic, not even when she was standing at his door did she realize she had actually traveled the distance. It wasn't until she actually felt her knuckles hit the door that it sank in. Waiting for the door to open her mind raced with a thousand things to say, to make up for just leaving like that... for taking three days to even tell him where she was... for leaving a journal post up for explaining that she was running further away ( ... )

His arms snapped up sharply, holding her tightly, desperately. A soft shudder ran through him as he did, all the tension he'd been holding for weeks finally relaxing as she settled into the curve of his body. He felt that internal 'click'...back where he belonged. Back where they both belonged.

Together...and it was perfect.

"I knew you'd be back." he whispered as he buried his face against her hair. "I knew..." He trailed off, drawing back when she did just to run his fingers through her hair and look his fill.

"There ain't nothin' to forgive." he assured her, then corrected himself with a shrug. "Well...ain't *much.*" His gaze sobered, his eyes narrowing just a little. "You scared the *fuck* out of me at first. If you were just takin' off...you could've told me. I wouldn't have come after you...not if you needed to run."

Leaning into his touch she shut her eyes for a moment, almost willing to just forget it all... forget what she knew, what she had done, everything she had risked... to end up with nothing in the end. Looking into Joe's eyes she could see the worry in him, and the wear that had taken its toll on him ( ... )

Eve watched him quit, which to her felt unneeded... he wasn't part of the company anymore... they would have no reason to go after him... or even care if he stopped showing up. Eve figured that it was more for personal amusement that Ryan didn't tell him... that or maybe a part of her felt a slight bit of guilt for what she had done. Eve almost laughed at that, but she could hope it to be true.

"Joe... you have no idea how much I want to lie to you right now. I want to tell you that I don't know, that I'm not sure when she sold it, that she wouldn't tell me... but I can't lie to you... not right now."

Eve swallowed hard, realizing that the moment for a happy reunion... for being happy to be home and in his arms had passed her by.

"The day you found her in Lindsey's office... that morning she signed it over to him." She bit her bottom lip, holding it in along with the breath in her lungs as she tensed up waiting for his reaction.

For a moment, Joseph couldn't breathe again...but only because he couldn't quite swallow past the bile that rose in his throat. Reaching up to wipe a hand over his face, he found himself shaking with silent, semi-hysterical laughter ( ... )

If Eve thought she felt defeated outside of Wolfram and Hart Sunday, she had experienced merely a glimpse of what Joe seemed to be going through, and she didn't know what to do. Her hand went to her cheek, fingers pressing into her eyebrow a bit before they ran up into her hair. Her hand hung at the back of her neck, stuck in the one place she had been standing in since she started to talk, and as much as she wanted to move to his side, to curl into his lap and just apologize for it all she couldn't seem to move herself from that spot.

Then he said it, and she knew she'd never move. Her head shook a bit snapping herself out of whatever haze she might have been in, because really that was the only explanation for it.

She wasn't even sure when she had moved, but suddenly she was standing in front of him in near tears, "I told you I was sorry... I just wasn't exactly specific at the time."

The sound of her voice brought him out of his haze just a little, realizing how distraught she was...how guilty she felt.

"Hey...c'mere." he murmured, reaching up to catch her hand and pull her into his lap, wrapping his arms around her to hold her close. He shifted his head to bury his face against her neck for a moment...breathing in the scent of her, memorizing it...burning every part of her into his soul. He wanted to keep it close...keep *her* close when his time came...

"This ain't on you." he finally whispered, drawing back to look up at her. "It's not...okay? Know it...in your heart and soul, know it."

There was so much left to do. He had to withdraw from all his classes at school...talk to Ezekiel Ellison, make sure he'd look after Eve if there was any backlash...

"You love nothing, Tarsus...nothing but freedom. That is why I will take it from you."The stink of his father's cologne was in his nostrils, then, cloying and saccharin. He remembered that moment, when his life sentence was handed down, how his father pulled him ( ... )
