Title: Don’t Die Before I Do - Phantoms Never Sleep 12/12

Rating: NC-17

Characters: Jack/Ianto, Rest of the team, new group of alien nasties.
Chapter:  Sequel to “With You I Am Alone Too.”

Spoilers: Set series one, post ‘’Cyberwoman”, but anything Torchwood could be hinted at.

Summary: The end of Phantoms, although if you fancy a bit of smut I guess you could probably read it without having followed the series.  Jack and Ianto’s relationship appears to have gone full circle, but how have the Phantoms shaped their lives? A smutty end to the series with just a dash of fluff (because I’ve missed it! :P).

I don't know who he is
In my dreams he does exist
His passion is a kiss
And I can not resist

I wait here
Don't die before I do
I wait here
Don't die before I do

I don't know who you are
I know that you exist
Don't die
Sometimes love seems so far
I wait here
Your love I can't dismiss
I wait here

Empty. Inside and out. Nothing was real again.

The Hub around him was silent, dead almost, all anguish locked up away behind archive doors, imprisoned within the walls for the vaults. A metaphor for himself. Whatever openness Ianto had once felt was gone, the life that returned to him locking all the pain in his heart away.

“You’re body is still in shock.” Owen smiled quickly, shining the light into Ianto’s eyes as he sat on the autopsy table, legs dangling. The Doctor grunted contented, pulling the pen from his lab coat pocket and scrawling down something onto his clipboard. He reached for his stethoscope, pressing it gently to his patient’s chest. “Apart from that, you’re fine.”

“Are you sure?” Jack’s voice rang out quickly before anyone else could speak.

“Perfectly. Blood counts normal, regular heartbeat, his breathing is fine.” Owen paused, looking up to where the Captain was watching over them. “Honestly, Jack, there’s nothing else I can check. He’s completely fine.”

“He’s also still sitting here.” Ianto replied quickly, reaching up to re-fasten the buttons of his shirt. “In case you hadn’t noticed.”

“Sorry, Ianto.”

“It’s fine.” The young Welshman gave him a weak smile, pulling himself off the table so that he could look up to Jack above him. “It appears I’m ready for work then sir.”

“No, Ianto.” The Captain shook his head. “You’re going home.”

“I don’t think so, Jack. There’s still-”

“Yan…….” The older man spoke out again, eyes stern as they met his. “That wasn’t a request.”

“But Jack-”

“Go home Ianto. I’ll come check on you tomorrow.” He have the younger man a soft smile.  “You need to rest.”

So he went home, back to the flat that felt so alien to him. His previous life, frozen in time, cloaked in shadows and forgotten dreams. Except, as he walked through the rooms, his eyes looked at everything afresh, a new. He no longer saw Lisa in the kitchen cabinets, no longer saw her smiling features reflected back at him in the pans that they had bought together. No longer envisaged her choosing their cushions or sheets. For once, Ianto relished the feeling, felt easy knowing that this was ok. This wasn’t forgetting Lisa. This was accepting that she would always be in his mind, there for whenever he needed her. If the Phantoms had taught him one thing, they had taught him the power of memories.

Ianto lay down onto his bed, hands folded behind his head as he stared at the ceiling. He sighed trying to close his eyes, but his thoughts were too loud to sleep, to heavy to ignore. He had so much that he still had to say, so much so that the unsaid words were ringing in his ears. He grunted, eyes snapping open, one thing linking each thought that ran through his mind. Jack. Why hadn’t he told him? Wasn’t that what he had been fighting to come back for? To tell Jack the truth?

Ianto sat up, suddenly feeling so restless that relaxation was the furthest thing from his mind. He ran a hand through his hair, unsure of what to do. He knew the one place where he wanted to be. And it sure as hell wasn’t sitting back at home.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Captain Jack Harkness had never felt so torn. He stared down at the piles of papers, willing them to disappear. Willing it all to disappear. Partly willing Torchwood to disappear. Why did it always separate him from the one thing he wanted? Reports of strange sightings around Charles Street, newly written files on the Phantoms, pieces of paper lining his desk, constant reminders of the last few days, of all the hurt, of all the pain. Of Ianto. The Captain sighed, resting his head into his hands. He wished more than anything that he was with him………

A movement from outside his office caused Jack to look up, raising an inquisitive eyebrow. The Hub was long since empty, he’d sent the others home hours ago. He continued to stare at his office door, ears listening for the slightest noise, to detect the smallest presence. There was another movement and a shrill cry from Myfanwy. He wasn’t so alone after all.

“You shouldn’t be here.” Ianto jumped slightly in his skin at the sudden voice behind him. He kept his eyes forward, hands busy typing at Owen’s work station. “I sent you home remember?”

“I do, sir, yes.” Ianto smiled, risking a gentle look over his shoulder. He grinned, looking back towards the screen. “Work to do.”

“It can wait.” Jack walked over to where the younger man was sitting, resting his hands onto his shoulders. His eyes scanned the monitor in front of him, meeting with the disturbingly familiar pretty face of Rebecca Morrison.

“She can’t wait, Jack.” Ianto’s voice was solemn as he typed the final snippets of information into the file. “Not anymore.”

“I tried to save her.” The Captain gulped. “But I couldn’t.”

“What happened?”

“We froze her, to fool the Phantoms into thinking she was dead.” The older man’s grip on Ianto’s shoulders tightened as he felt the pain of failing grow in his stomach. “But they realised, killed her rather than let her go. There was nothing I could do.”

“Jack……” Soft hands reached up, taking him by his own hands. “It’s not your fault.”

“Then who’s is it?”

“No one’s, Jack.” Ianto paused, standing up and turning round so that he could look his Captain in the eye. “You never asked for any of this.”

“I could have stopped it.”

“No. No, you couldn’t.” Reaching up, the younger man took Jack’s face between his palms, his blue eyes looking deep into his. “Do you hear me, Jack? There was nothing you could do.”

The world froze around them. Deep pools of blue mingling. The understanding that they had both been looking for.

His lips were aching by the time Jack leaned forward, pulling him into a deep embrace. Their lips locked gently, moving softly against each other at first, reassuring and comforting. Winding his arms around the slim waist before him, Jack pulled Ianto closer, feeling a soft tongue reach out and lick at his lips. He opened his mouth, loving the feeling as their mouths meshed together, rediscovering what each man had thought they had lost. Soft hands were running through his hair, across his back and Jack felt himself become lost, unaware of his surroundings, of himself as the kiss continued. He was suddenly addicted to the warmth that radiated through the body pressed to his, reminded of how much he had missed the feeling of being with someone, no longer alone. He groaned, feeling Ianto’s tongue graze the roof of his mouth, sending a shiver down his spine.

“Jack………” Ianto pulled away, chest moving uncontrollably as he managed to meet his gaze again. “I want….”

“What do you want Ianto?”

“I want us……I want you.” The younger man breathed, pulling him into another kiss, filling it with all the desire that his soul could muster. “Please……”

Jack didn’t need to reply, taking Ianto gently by the hand. Pulling him after him, he led him back into his office, opening the hatch leading to his bed. He smiled, pressing another soft kiss to his lips. “If you’re sure?”

“More than you know, Jack.” Ianto replied, before moving to climb down the ladder.

They collapsed down onto the camp bed, shirts thrown and forgotten on what little floor space there was. Ianto’s hands set about exploring Jack’s body, moving across every contour of muscle, enjoying the silk like feeling of his skin. He moaned as Jack’s tongue traced a soft trail across his throat, before his warm mouth began to bite and nuzzle at the join of his neck. Keen hands wandered down further, resting for a moment on his hips before moving to the zip of his trousers, quickly undoing them before sliding the two layers of fabric down his legs, cold air meeting his skin in an exquisite delight.

A soft moan escaped his lips as Jack began to continue down Ianto’s body, pausing to take a nipple into his mouth, sucking at it gently, teeth nipping slight at the hard skin. Ianto wriggled beneath him, his own hands resting onto the Captain’s shoulders, stroking and caressing with encouragement. Jack laughed gently as he moaned again, his tongue working down his abdomen. He looked up, taking Ianto’s eyes in his as he licked a trail down his cock, before taking the tip of it into his mouth and worshipping it with his mouth. Shots of pure electricity bolted straight up into his head, his back arching beneath Jack, straining under the touch, his hips lifting for more.

“Jack……” His words were barely a whisper, hoarse and strained. “No……I need you.”

There was a sudden loss of contact; cold and unwanted as Jack reached out to the table beside them for the lube, ridding himself of his remaining clothes in the process. In mere seconds he was above Ianto again, his mouth deeply entwined with his and his hands worked below him. Ianto rose up into them, feeling the familiar fingers scrape against his prostrate, forcing out another moan, louder this time. He pressed himself deeper into Jack’s mouth, eyes darkened by lust.

He was empty again as Jack withdrew his fingers, but the sudden loneliness was short lived when he felt the Captain push gently into him, a wave of pleasure and desire mixed into one washed through his system. They stayed still for a moment, relishing in the closeness that they had been missing for what had felt like so long, adjusting to each other’s presence. Until, ever so slowly at first, Jack began to move, finding a gentle pace, almost cradling Ianto’s body in his arms.

As they found a slow rhythm, Ianto gripped Jack’s back tighter, loving the feeling of their skin and sweat mingling with every movement. He had never experienced anything with Jack like this; never felt like what they were doing was anything more than sex. But this was different. Jack was taking care of him, being soft and kind and gentle, holding him like he was the most precious thing on earth. Jack Harkness was no longer just fucking him; he was making love to him.

His thoughts overcome by the sensations now coursing through his body, Ianto let himself be carried away with Jack, the room around them becoming engulfed in the sounds and scents of sex. As their movements became faster and more frantic by each passing second, Ianto felt his orgasm build, his body stilling as he yelled out his release, nails digging into the soft canvas of the Captain’s back. Barely a moment later Jack followed, Ianto’s body driving him over the edge.

Collapsing to his side, spent and exhausted, Jack threw a protective arm around the younger man’s shoulders, pulling his body closer into his with what remained of his strength. They both lay there in silence, letting their pulses slow and their breathing repay the oxygen debt within their bodies. Neither wanted to be the first to speak, each happy to let it engulf them within the darkness.

“I came back for you.” He didn’t know what made him do it, but the words shot from Ianto’s mouth faster than he could even think of what he was saying. “I mean.........” He paused, turning so that he could look him in the eye. “I remembered you………and I realised………”

“You realised what?”

“You really don’t know?” Ianto smiled, looking away embarrassed. “And I thought it was obvious.”

“What was?”

“I love you, Jack. No matter how long I try to deny it.”

“You love me?”

“Yes!” The younger man could feel his cheeks flush with colour in the dim light. “I do.”

“But how?”

“What?”

“How can you love me? After all I’ve done to you.”

“Jack………” Ianto reached out, stroking his face, his own features filled with confusion. “I don’t understand.”

“The Phantoms. They told me that you could never forgive me. I…………” The Captain paused, taking his hand and kissing it gently.

“And you believe them over me?” The Welshman laughed, nestling further into the nook under Jack’s arm. “They weren’t just out to hurt me, Jack. Remember that.”

“You’re right.” The older man smiled affectionately, pressing a kiss to the top of his head. “You always have been. I just never wanted to see it. You were never nothing to me, Ianto.”

“I know that now. I just wish I had known it then.”

“So do I.” Jack paused, tilting his head so that he could tenderly kiss his soft lips. “It could have changed everything.”

“Or not. We’ll never know that for sure.”

“No. All we have is here and now. All we have is each other.”

“Is that enough?” Ianto’s voice was barely audible as he let his eyes rest on Jack’s. “Am I enough?”

“I love you too.” The Captain had to blurt out the words in order to ensure that they left his mouth this time. “Does that answer your question?”

“It might.” The young Welshman quipped, resting his head onto Jack’s chest. He sighed, feeling the heart beat drum against his ear, a soft lullaby soothing his eyelids, forcing them to close and shut away the world. The noise in his head was gone, all the questions answered by those four little words. Somehow, Ianto knew that there would be times like this again, maybe not with the Phantoms, but with some other alien. Another situation where he would look death in the eye and realise that he would die before the man he loved. But knowing that Jack knew the truth at last, Ianto was prepared to face the world. After all, he had given his Captain the one gift that would he could keep with him forever. And to Ianto, that could only ever be his greatest legacy.

The Phantoms were gone, and the pain that they had caused would fade. But the lessons learned from their games, they would live on forever.
