Carson looked so vulnerable under the wires and machines, and it startled Rodney to see the good doctor under these conditions. He was usually the one in the bed with Carson at his side watching over him as he slept on. But as people went about their business in the city - John training the new group, Radek in the lab, Elizabeth doing paperwork, Ronon and Teyla on the mainland - Rodney stood by Carson’s side, protecting him and waiting patiently to see those blue eyes again.

They were words that were giving too much away too soon and echoing off the infirmary walls. An unstoppable and unbroken force expelling every little thought he had had during the past three days as he'd waited silently for Carson to awake.
A small smile from his friend caused him to stop and realize that his face was wet with tears, and so was Carson's.

I couldn’t feel my arm and I hadn’t been able to for the past ten minutes. Carson had confiscated my left hand and was holding it hostage in a vice grip across his stomach, while the numb arm was cradled between our two bodies awkwardly. Where does this unused arm usually go? Under his head? Under my head? Raised above us? Resting between us?
Carson inhaled loudly and pulled my left hand closer towards his chest. It hurt like hell, but to feel his heart beating under my finger tips made the numbness all worth it.

Rodney had figured that Carson would smell of disinfectant or that disgusting sterile scent that seemed to follow Rodney from hospital to hospital, but now there were traces of mint, bubblegum, and sweat in the air. The mint and the sweat were not that unfamiliar to Rodney as he had noticed it on Hoff when Carson was running around trying to make sense of the chaotic surroundings. Rodney sighed.
“Sorry, did I wake you, luv?”
“Sort of...Your smell was gone.”

Rodney bit down playfully and grinned around Carson’s big toe. He could feel Carson’s body move as he chuckled at Rodney’s antics.
“Do I look like dessert to you?”
