I was wondering...

...did people who were already watching in season 4 make the connection back to Yellow Fever by the time Heaven and Hell aired? You know, that the reason for Dean getting infected with the Ghost sicknes was him torturing souls in Hell, and NOT that he was “a dick ( Read more... )

Yeah, I remember when I watched I was like What? Sam AND Bobby agree that Dean's got the Ghost Sickness because they think he's a dick??? Wtf???

And then there was that scene in the motel room with vision!Lilith and that's when the whole ha ha look how ridiculous the Ghost Sickness thing is! completely toppled over and went straight into bloody scary. For Dean it was quite clearly NOT a laughing matter. (I must say that I'm not ever really surprised when Sam is callous and insensitive towards Dean, because I don't ever really expect differently. Even though - in this episode it was way worse than normal, and it seemed to come out of nowhere, no siren, no nothing. Season 4 Sam, what can you say, right?)

The thing is, I would have loved to see Sam's a-HA! moment after i>Heaven and Hell, and to have even just one single line, telling Dean Oh man, this must be why you got the Ghost Sickness a few episodes ago! I'm so so sorry I made fun of you that time!

You know, to have the reason for the Ghost Sickness infection acknowledged on screen.

Definitely. You can see that whole ghost sickness thing was played for the laughs, Dean was used as this comedic side-kick and such but when Lilith entered the scene it just got real and scary. I find it telling that neither Sam nor Bobby got how traumatizing it was for Dean. Remember hallicuifer? I don't think Dean laughed when Sam was all tormented by his hallucinations. Of course, this is Sam, so it is not really surprising that he doesn't care either way.(And it is not just about S4 or demon blood, Sam was equally cruel in S8/S9- and after a while you'll have to accept that this is what his character is.)

An apology/acknowledgement from Sam would have been nice-but again, Sam rarely apologies. Problem is, things like this do not cross the writer's mind, Dean is not that important to them anyway, so they don't really think about his character/arc in an individualistic sense. For example,Dean's vampire connection wasn't mentioned with respect to Benny arc. In fact I'll go ahead and claim that if Jensen weren't playing Dean, we would have had a lot of issues with the character in terms of character development and continuity.

I've actually often wondered if I'd have less problems with Sam if he was played by Jensen. And not just because of looks :)

I think a lot of my problems with Sam stem from the fact that I think JP's acting is all over the place. I just never know what's really going on in his head.

No problems there with Jensen :D
