The polite deadly sins

I have been neglecting to cross post.

Here's what I was writing today on
my web site:

The polite deadly sins

"With the aid of a little more coaching for the political sages, a little more genteel listlessness for the general society, and a tolerable management of the assumed honest in dishonesty, most effective and most patronized of the polite deadly sins, he speedily came to be considered of much promise." Dickens, "Hard Times" (italics added)

I have been thinking about the prevalence of hate and dishonesty in the public rhetoric of the US Society. We seem to be in the throes of decay. Not that we are partisan and have honest disagreements. It's that we demonize each other. And we continually reshape our public statements to deceive and manipulate.
