There’s something in the way he laughs, talks and acts. The way he steps into the room, and somehow everything feels easier, harder, right and wrong. The way he first rambles about such useless and irrelevant things and jokes around, and then on the other moment discusses more serious subjects constructively. How he at times is sensible and yet so irrelevant. An amazing mixture of illogicality, bad humor and inexhaustible comic art in the same package. Isshi had always thought he was a good judge of human nature, but that was before he got to known the bassist. Nao was something far above his understanding.
The way he sits when he plays. The bass in his lap, legs crossed and wrinkles appearing on his forehead as he concentrates. The fingers that fly over the strings, the pick in the corner of his mouth. Isshi often forgot himself looking at the other, secretly but not secretly anyway. How he drums the beat with his foot together with the drums. How he just grins a little and changes subject if someone praises.
Sometimes their gazes met, and Isshi just smiled and turned his own away quickly, because he didn’t want the other to realize he was staring. Instead, he tried to focus on the lyrics and melody, but still listened too closely to the smooth bass sounds behind his back.
How had they ended up there? Isshi wasn’t sure, nor did he remember, but it didn’t even matter that much at that moment. He had always been said to be selfish, but at last someone, that he thought of more, than himself had been found. The world seemed much more beautiful, the sun shone brighter, he was even smiling more than usual. And those quiet, gentle words whispered into his ears gave protection and strength he hadn’t even realized he needed before.
They tried their best to be as if nothing had happened. And yet they stole some time to be with each other always when possible. Isshi needed his cigarette breaks between the practice and lately Nao had started to ignore his old promise to not smoke.
The backyard was usually desert, and there smelled like cigarettes, gasoline and wet asphalt. Isshi was standing in the shadow leaning his back against the wall and thinking of how small pieces happiness was built. At that very moment it tasted slightly of cigarettes, throat pastilles and something sweet on his tongue, smelled like a familiar perfume in his nose and felt like a tickling warmth in the bottom of his stomach. For that laugh, smile, eyes and voice he would have traveled to the end of the world and back again and still he would never find someone else who made his heart beat so fast.
It didn’t make any sense, and neither him, nor they, knew where it would lead, how it would continue or end. But at that moment their world was just way too beautiful for them to think of something like that, too beautiful for wondering and hesitating. But for the first time Isshi realized he hoped he believed in a word ‘forever’.
The cancer stick went out as it hit the wet ground. The voice on his ear sounded as reluctant as he was himself.
“We should go back…”
“Not just yet”, he uttered with a small laugh and leaned his chin on the other’s shoulder.
Those moments were too short. But the clock didn’t wait, nor did Izumi. Nao gave him a quick kiss on the corner of his mouth, took his hand in his own and pulled him back inside, smiling mischievously. The trip back to the practice room had probably never taken them so long.
