meet the (possible; maybe in the distant future?) parents.

in which they visit Yifan's family in Canada and Joonmyun, the (possible) in-law, is too nervous for his own good. (and they decorate a christmas tree because they're lame and adorable that way.)
Joonmyun adjusts his coat one more time before turning around to face his boyfriend. Yifan smiles at him, taking his hand and tucking it safely into the large pocket of his coat. They’re both freezing because of the snow, but Joonmyun doesn’t mind being held close to Yifan’s warm body like this.
"Are you ready?" Yifan asks, and the younger of the two sends him a look of ‘will I ever be ready?’
"Come on, my parents are waiting. You’re really not going to help improve their impression of you by being late," he points out. Joonmyun sighs and leans closer to him. He brushes away some of the snow on Yifan’s shoulder and leans up to kiss him on the cheek (which needs a lot of effort because of… he’s not short; Yifan’s just too tall).
"I hate you," he says, but the words don’t really hit their mark.
When Yifan gets the key from under the mat and opens the door to his childhood home, he’s surprised to see that his parents aren’t there yet. He picks up a note placed on the table at the very entrance of the house.
"Hello, son. We’ll be back soon. Just make yourself comfortable.
Also, there’s hot chocolate in the microwave, if you want to reheat it.”
Yifan smiles at the familiar handwriting of his mother. He pockets the note and grabs Joonmyun’s hand. He smiles when he sees that Joonmyun is already out of his (actually, Yifan’s) large coat and wearing his cute red sweater.
He pulls Joonmyun closer by the waist and kisses him sweetly. The warmth spreads between the two of them, and Joonmyun pulls away before they get too carried away and Yifan’s parents catch them making out in the entrance hall of their house.
When they walk into the living room, the first thing they see is the Christmas tree, only half-decorated. Yifan chuckles when he sees the box of decorations with the same ornaments that they’ve been using since he was a little boy. He takes hold of a Christmas ball and hangs it on one of the plastic branches.
Joonmyun seems fascinated by the tiny Santa Claus ornament (and Yifan feels some strange sense of déjà vu when he remembers that that was his favorite one as a child as well). He hangs it and takes hold of a ball.
They share a look and Yifan wordlessly hands him more ornaments until they’re slowly filling the bare tree with more and more decorations. They even position and plug the lights together. Yifan goes back to his childhood when he would decorate this exact tree with his mom and brother’s help. He misses it a lot, but he likes his life in Seoul too much to go back to Canada just because of a moment of intense nostalgia. (And he likes his life with Joonmyun. He likes it a lot.)
Joonmyun frowns when his hand touches nothing except for the star that they’re supposed to hang at the very top. He hands it to Yifan, but the older male smirks and gives it back to him. “You hang it,” he says.
Joonmyun knows that Yifan’s just trying to challenge his vertically-challenged boyfriend, so he takes the star and tiptoes to the very tippiest of his toes just to hang it loosely at the end. He nearly falls on the almost-finished tree, but luckily Yifan wraps an arm around his waist and catches him just in time.
The younger male stabilizes himself with his hands on Yifan’s shoulders, and his breath catches when he realizes how close they are to each other. He slides his hands to the back of Yifan’s neck, pulling him down so that their lips meet halfway.
They’re having a really sweet moment with the lights behind them, flickering and reflecting on the shiny surface of the Christmas balls, until a deep cough disturbs them. Joonmyun instantly pulls away, hiding his face behind his sweater’s sleeve.
"Mom! Dad!" Yifan smiles his huge adorable gummy smile (that Joonmyun has to admit he fell so hard for ). His parents hug him and Joonmyun’s left standing there, awkwardly watching the new pattern that the lights flicker in.
Yifan notices his discomfort and pulls Joonmyun forward, fingers intertwined between them. “This is Joonmyun,” he says with a proud smile on his face.
The shorter male smiles sweetly, but deep inside, he’s dying. He can feel their constant scrutiny over every little movement he makes. He can feel the disapproval.
Of course, it’s all whisked away when Yifan’s mom pinches his cheek and his dad smiles a cute smile (eerily like Yifan’s) and his younger brother, Zitao (who, for some reason, nobody noticed), attaches himself to Joonmyun’s shoulder. It’s kind of surprising and, to be honest, pretty overwhelming. But he kind of likes the warm welcome, especially during dinner when the parents start interrogating him and Zitao starts talking about his brother’s many exes and embarrassing moments.
They spend the night in a hotel room, and the smile on Joonmyun’s face has been there for so long that it almost looks like it’s been etched there. Yifan chuckles as he watches Joonmyun brush his teeth with foam covering his bright grin.
He hugs the smaller male from behind, burying his nose into Joonmyun’s soft hair. “Hmm, you smell nice.”
Joonmyun spits out the toothpaste and gargles it all off. He reaches back to pull down Yifan’s head and lean his chin on his shoulder. Yifan kisses him on the cheek, chuckling when pink dusts the pale skin of Joonmyun’s face.
"So how was your first meeting with my parents?" Yifan crushes their bodies together until Joonmyun lets out a little squeak.
"Well, when you left to buy milk with Zitao, we had a talk in the living room."
This is when Yifan starts getting nervous. “And what did they say?”
"They told me to call them ‘mama’ and ‘baba.’ Also, they said you had commitment issues before, so if I want you to propose already, I just have to tell them and they’d force you to."
Yifan pauses.
"I knew this was a bad idea."
