Mortimer went in to the kitchen and began opening cupboards and drawers. Flour, potatoes, onions, carrots, celery, barley, garlic, thyme, rosemary, salt, pepper, cook-pot, utensils, cookbook.
Beef stew.... The recipe said 'four to six servings.' That wasn't going to be enough. Who knows how many Elric brothers would show up. A serving is... what? A cup? ...I'll have to triple that at least.
He quickly cut up the beef, coated it in flour and browned it with the garlic and onions. Then he added water and barley and began to cut up the potatoes, celery and carrots. When they had been reduced to manageable chunks they went in the water as well.
That left him with nothing to do but wait for it to cook.
