I HATE when I see new developments going in, and they just CHOP down dozens of 50 year old trees. For god sakes. People will pay a lot more for your stupid little town houses if they have mature trees on the property. Freakin' work it into the design, and keep the nice, big shady, oxygen-producing trees. But no, instead, they plant little stick trees that have to be held up by a steak, which won't produce shade for another 20 years. And sometimes in the exact spot the old big tree was.
I have this weird thing with trees, I guess. Like, I literally cried a little bit when they cut down these 9 gorgeous, ancient poplar trees and knocked down the cute little farm house near my work. I used to take oats to the goats on that property on my breaks. I even took some artsy photos of those trees in the winter. I enjoyed their cool shade on my walks. Now the developers are doing more damage across the street from that house. An entire row of trees growing along the ditch, probably a good quarter mile long, just completely gone. I guess in the back of my mind, I was expecting this for years. The only way that little farm survived so long in the middle of the city was the grandfathering laws, and I knew once the little old people who lived there passed on or moved, it wouldn't be a farm anymore. But god, just leave the damn trees! At least some of them.
I suppose it's harder to get the bulldozers and equipment onto the property if they do. But man. It's just such a shock to walk by, and they are just GONE. It feels like an apocolypse has happened or something. At least a horrible natural disaster.
Yes, I'm decidedly weird about trees. I have always seen them as wise, silent watchers of the human race, often amused by our doings. Most days, I'd choose the company of trees over most people. MEh.
