December Daily & Project Life (discovery)

Feb 07, 2012 20:06

Winter holidays started on December 16th and somehow somewhere I stumbled across the term December Daily. It’s killing me not to remember how and where but what I do remember is that it peaked my interest right away. I googled the term and ended up on its creator’s blog.

December Daily is a concept invented by Ali Edwards back in 2007 which kinda works like an advent calendar. From the first to the twenty-fifth of December, she creates a double page layout for each day. The pages are 15 x 21 cm in size and she adorns each with pictures and journaling. Some days are holidays related while others are just normal everyday stuff. Between each set of pages, she inserts a divider made of an overlay and embellishments.

I spent almost every evening of my holidays reading her blog left and right and thus discovered another interesting memory keeping concept: Project Life.

Project Life was created by Becky Higgins in 2009 and is a scrapbooking technique that simplifies how to document life and preserve memories. You only need 5 basic products to get started: 1) a 30 x 30 cm 3-rings binder, 2) a Core Kit (a set of 7,5 x 10 cm journaling cards), 3) a pack of plastic page protectors (Becky created 8 different designs), 4) a pen and 5) your pictures.

Back in 2008, I wanted to get into scrapbooking and got my brother to buy me Le grand livre du scrapbooking in order to learn more and get started. But I had to move to Metz where my bank account reached zero within a couple weeks. As months passed, I did buy a few things here and there but nothing much. Moreover, it turned out to be the worst year of my life and not one I would have enjoyed documenting anyway. The next year, I came Home, started making more money, got into crafts and pretty much gave up on the idea of scrapbooking.

Because the way I see it, scrapbooking nowadays is all about the pretty. A couple pictures glued on several layers of pattern papers and a ton of embellishments i.e. a lot of products that cost a lot of money. So I forgot about it.

Until Project Life. Because the first rule of Project Life is that there are no rules and whatever works for ME is the right way to do it. Some Project Lifers are scrapbookers at heart and they do quite a bit of decorating while others keep their pages very simple.

Personally I couldn't wait to get started… so I didn't.

Those first two weeks (51 and 52 of 2011) all I did was: 1) take pictures, 2) write down notes in my diary and 3) work on my layouts on 2 A4 sheets of papers. Those first two weeks, it was all my head but I was very excited and it was all I could think about. Knowing myself the way I do, I was certain I would get bored and too busy and give up on the idea, but it's been 6 weeks and I'm still there. Go me!
