so today was an interesting day at school. i've been a wreck as far as anyone can see -- i had a broken toe (that was in a cast, for god's sake) for four weeks. my students were so excited and pleased to see that i was better this monday, since i took it off last weekend. and then on tuesday i lost my voice and was sick, and i've been sick the rest of the week. yesterday, my eye started doing crazy shit and i knew better than to wear contacts today so i wore the glasses i bought last spring from a street vendor in ximending (the trendy youth district of taipei).
today, my students were all like "teacher!!! you wear glasses!!" or "ms. g! your glasses! good!!" (giving me a thumbs up sign)
their english skills are actually generally much higher than the last compliment would let you know, they're just really lazy when it comes to constructing sentences...but anyhow.
i was almost sort of embarrassed to wear such youthful trendy glasses among youth wearing trendy glasses. but it was so well-received that i think i scored some coolness points.
they also liked the idea that crossing your fingers can bring you good luck (for some reason "i'll keep my fingers crossed" was a vocab expression, and they all thought it was ridiculous until i explained and showed them how to do it.
for your viewing pleasure, here's me with my rad plastic glasses and my rad asian peace sign.
