People who know me might say I'm an open book. They may say I'm an idealist. They'll hopefully say I'm very spiritual and optimistic. And they'll definitely say I get really passionate and excited about things. Well, the latest thing that I am really passionate and excited about is Barack Obama, who I had the great pleasure of seeing speak yesterday in Dallas. If you are pro-Hillary or pro-McCain, please don't stop reading, because I have no intention of attacking your candidate. I have great respect for both of these people and believe that either one would be an improvement on the current administration. However, Barack is my man because he is everything I wish I was (and a few things I proudly am). Here are just a few of the beliefs I have that Barack Obama also embraces:
-Education MUST be of high quality for all children - regardless of their social class, race, or ethnicity.
-Parents are the front line for educating their children, but schools must be excellent to support learning.
-People cannot insist that teachers be better qualified and better educated if they are not willing to compensate and support them accordingly.
-College should be available and affordable for everyone who wants to attend.
-It is the responsibility of every person in this country to give of themselves to improve this country - either as volunteers, civil servants, soldiers, or any other community service role they can hold.
-Change starts at the ground level. The People must be involved and included if real change is to occur.
-Health care can and must be affordable for everyone - immediately.
-The color of your skin, your faith, your ethnicity, your sexual preference - the things that make you special - must not be used to oppress you in any way - EVER.
-We should not enter into war if it is not thrust upon us. Lives are too valuable to throw away for reasons of money or arrogance. It's right there in the Ten Commandments: no killing. (I love the bumper sticker, "Who would Jesus bomb?")
-Those men and women who are brave enough to enlist in the armed forces of this country MUST be taken care of with appropriate conditions, body armor, and brief tours of duty. No veteran should ever be homeless or without proper medical care and support.
-Any person who is working in this country should not still be poor. The minimum wage must keep up with inflation. When a CEO makes in 10 minutes more than his employees do in a year, there is an equity problem that musn't be ignored.
-Our environment is precious and must be protected, even if doing so is inconvenient or difficult.
-We must not let the politics of fear decide our future.
-HOPE and "YES WE CAN" are some of the best words in the English language.
He has spent his life working for the rights of the disenfranchised, fighting for the environment, fighting to improve education, organizing communities, and inspiring thousands and thousands of people to make change happen for themselves. He is running for president because of what Dr. King called the "fierce urgency of now." If you want to know more about his positions on the issues, see
http://www.ontheissues.org/Senate/Barack_Obama.htm. But to me the most important thing about him is the message he carries: to never give up hope. Together, we can do anything. YES WE CAN.
