When Kim Jongdae first learned about The Light’s identity, he knew he was screwed. He’d always thought that The Light was someone less… desirable to match his ugly personality. The Light was, after all, a supervillain with far too many witty comebacks for a perfectly respectable superhero such as Jongdae to like. Because that’s what superheroes and supervillains did - they hated each other. Why would they have any reason at all to like each other when they were on two opposite sides of the spectrum of interests?

Except the first time Jongdae had witnessed The Light take off his mask and reveal the face behind that strip of cloth, he’d felt his heart give an unexpected leap when Byun Baekhyun, the student council’s Vice President, blinked and mused his hair, the silvery locks finally free from the confining cover. Jongdae despaired, his connection with the camera he’d been using to spy on The Light breaking and sizzling out as he panicked.

He’d had a crush on Baekhyun since their freshman year, and Jongdae laminated to himself that nothing in this world was fair. Why was his arch nemesis, his stupidly smart and irritating arch nemesis, his crush? This type of thing only happened in fanfiction, for fuck’s sake.

Nothing matched up. No matter the amount of times Jongdae rolled it around in his head, nor the amount of times Jongdae spent banging his head against the wall, did it make it any easier to process. The Byun Baekhyun he knew in high school wasn’t anything like what he’d expect a supervillain to be - he was smart, rich, outgoing, and pretty much had his entire life set out before him like a golden path to luxury and comfort.

But it was clear Jongdae didn’t know his crush as well as he’d thought.

Sometimes Jongdae hated his powers. It was one of those times. If only he hadn’t used his powers to hack into the camera, he could’ve just gone on fighting The Light without a care in the world.

Now?

Now, whenever he fought The Light, all he could think about was how it was Byun Baekhyun he was fighting. And when he remembered, he would end up losing, because one little falter was it took for Baekhyun to beat him down and run off. Baekhyun liked to take advantage of any opportunity presented to him and unfortunately, Jongdae provided him too many openings these days.

Jongdae frowned down at his biology textbook. He was supposed to be studying for the test coming up on Tuesday, but the topic of photosynthesis made him pause (maddeningly enough) and studying biology turned into daydreaming of future confrontations with The Light.

“Hey.”

The voice made Jongdae look up from his book. He did a double-take when the reason for all his misery and depression the last few days smiled down at him and sat in the empty seat in front of him. Baekhyun looked great in the school uniform, as usual, hair mused perfectly and teeth as pearly and straight as always. Jongdae stared at him blankly, a part of him freaking out because, well, crush, and the other half wondering if Baekhyun even knew who he really was like he did with Baekhyun.

When Jongdae didn’t respond, Baekhyun laughed sheepishly and asked, “Jongdae, right?” There were tiny crinkles at the edges of Baekhyun’s eyes when he smiled, and Jongdae stared at them, dazed. He’d never noticed them before.

He nearly groaned when he thought that. He was so fucking screwed, he wailed inwardly. How was he going to get over Baekhyun and finally defeat him when all he could think about was how Baekhyun looked when he smiled? Fucking hell.

Jongdae managed to nod. Baekhyun’s smile brightened, and Jongdae contained a wince. Stop, he pleaded in his head. He couldn’t take much more of this.

“I’m Baekhyun,” Baekhyun said, and Jongdae had to resist the urge to laugh hysterically. Yes, he thought, because he knew that far too well. Baekhyun continued, “I’m in your literature class.” And yeah, Jongdae knew that, too.

“Right, I know,” Jongdae said instead, and he was torn between fleeing for his life, and staying here because he was too lazy to go somewhere else (and had a hidden fear that he’d trip and fall and make a fool of himself if he did).

“Well, we have a partner presentation coming up,” Baekhyun said, crinkles at the edges of his eyes growing prominent, “And I was wondering if you wanted to partner up with me?”

And damn Jongdae’s mouth for not letting Jongdae think about it before it blurted, “Yeah, sure.”

“Why did you become a villain?” Voltage called. The Light just stared at him, cool eyes observing him from the mask. They were on a roof, each at opposite ends. The meeting had been purely coincidence, of course, and Voltage thought he’d use this chance to pick at The Light’s brain a little bit.

When Voltage thought The Light wasn’t going to answer him, The Light called back, “Why did you become a hero?”

And honestly, Voltage had no idea how to respond to that. The Light just smiled knowingly under his mask and disappeared from sight.

Working on the speech project with Baekhyun was hard. Hard meaning it only reinforced Jongdae’s crush instead of ending it. Baekhyun was really funny, making Jongdae laugh even while they were researching around for the perfect topic to talk about. The closer they grew, the harder Jongdae found it to really fight with The Light while on the duty.

Sometimes he’d catch Baekhyun staring at him, an obscure look in his eyes that Jongdae always got goosebumps from seeing. And Jongdae would stare back, wondering what Baekhyun was thinking in that cunning head of his.

Did he know about Jongdae?

Maybe.

Jongdae wasn’t sure how to react to that chain of thought and instead disregarded it. He’d think about it later.

The Light was lying down on the roof when Voltage came around. Sweaty and tired from his recent fight against a monster he’d managed to finally electrocute to a crisp, Voltage stopped abruptly at the sight, wondering edgily if The Light was going to take advantage of his fatigue and injury. It definitely wouldn’t have been the first time, that was for sure. The Light just looked at him for a moment before going back to staring up at the starry sky.

He looked awfully comfortable, Voltage thought, exhaustion lacing the edges of his vision. He swayed where he stood, and for a moment thought he was going to crumple right then and there, but managed to stay upright through sheer determination and stubbornness.

The Light looked at him again when he made no move to leave, and then eventually sighed and patted the spot next to him. Voltage tiredly debated with himself before deciding to toss all caution to the wind. He stumbled over and collapsed onto the roof floor, leg throbbing with every step he took. The Light stared at him.

“Hey,” The Light said dryly after a moment. “You better not be out for the count. If you were felled by a mere monster, I’ll be really offended, okay?”

“You talk as if I’m about to kick the bucket,” Voltage responded, blinking in effort to stay awake. Don’t fall asleep, he told himself. Don’t fall asleep.

“You look like you are,” The Light said with a small shrug, and turned his intense eyes to the sky again. Voltage followed his line of sight, and smiled blearily at the stars mysteriously winking at them from the distance. The Light and Voltage lapsed into silence there, and it was oddly comforting.

And despite his best efforts, Voltage felt his eyelids flutter closed. He was out in seconds.

Something was changing between him and Baekhyun, Jongdae felt. Baekhyun seemed a little distant these days. Jongdae would catch him staring down at his papers, eyes hazed over with thoughts he couldn’t decipher. Jongdae tried to ignore it, but it was all for naught. He noticed all the little ticks and bad habits Baekhyun had when he was nervous or bothered by something, and they were all showing - the one where he bit at the nail of his thumb, the one where he shuffled his papers around even when they were already perfectly stacked, the one where he tapped and knocked at the desk with his fingers and knuckles. They were all there.

“You okay?” Jongdae asked him, and Baekhyun stopped drumming his nails against the wood, focusing on Jongdae startlingly fast.

“What?” Baekhyun asked, as if he were coming out of a dream. Jongdae eyed him in concern.

“Are you okay?” he asked again, and Baekhyun was shaking his head before he even had the chance to finish.

“Yeah, I’m good,” Baekhyun said dismissively, and then finally (in what seemed like hours) focused on the papers in front of him. “Are you set for your part of the presentation?”

“Of course,” Jongdae said with a faint grin. For some reason, he was still a little worried; the distracted look on Baekhyun’s face made him anxious. “You’re the one who’s going to be doing most of the talking, anyway. I just have to stand there and look pretty.”

At the word ‘pretty,’ Baekhyun dropped his eyes down to Jongdae’s lips, that dazed look fluttering onto his face again. Jongdae grew nervous and, before he realized what he was doing, licked his dry lips. When Baekhyun followed the movement, Jongdae flushed slightly and cleared his voice. Baekhyun jumped and began to gather his stuff as quickly as possible.

“Right, well,” Baekhyun said, swallowing. “I’m going to, you know, leave. I’ll see you… later…”

Jongdae just hummed, watching in silent confusion as Baekhyun flew out of the room. And for some reason, he felt as if something really significant had just happened.

He wasn’t sure what it was, though, so he just shrugged and sighed before turning back to his papers.

When he met The Light again, it seemed as if the villain was waiting for him, arms crossed in front of his chest and posture slouched, as if defeated. Voltage had never seen him like that before, and he walked over curiously, wondering what was going on.

The Light looked at him, and the recognition in his eyes made Voltage stop. A fist squeezed at his heart, tension lacing his limbs. So that was why Baekhyun had been so weird with him yesterday.

He knew.

There was no other explanation, no other reason. Voltage swallowed, suddenly far too nervous, before squaring his shoulders and making his way over to The Light with a confidence he didn’t feel at all.

“Hi, Byun Baekhyun,” Voltage said calmly, and was secretly grateful there were no tremors in his voice.

“Hello, Kim Jongdae,” The Light replied, voice smooth and serene.

“How’d you find out?” Voltage, also known as Jongdae, asked quietly, and The Light snorted under his breath.

“How else?” The Light, also known as Baekhyun, said back, a tint of humor coloring his tone of voice. “I cheated and looked under your mask while you were sleeping.”

“A real bad guy,” Jongdae remarked dryly, though he was smiling.

“Only a person with honor wouldn’t have looked,” Baekhyun said, the grin on his face visible through the cloth. “And I definitely have none of that.”

Jongdae stepped in closer, debated with himself for a bit more, before finally giving into the urge to lift his hand. He ran a hand down Baekhyun’s masked face, wondering what it’d feel like to cup Baekhyun’s cheeks in his palms. Would his skin feel as soft as it looked out of the mask?

Slowly, he pulled the mask off Baekhyun’s face. Baekhyun let him, eyes closed as Jongdae brought it over his head. Jongdae watched, mesmerized, as Baekhyun was literally unmasked before him. Baekhyun’s silvery locks fell into place as soon as the mask was off completely.

Baekhyun blinked his eyes open, and Jongdae wondered if he felt vulnerable like that, in only about 90% of his dark costume. Then Baekhyun lifted his own hand, surprisingly gentle fingers tugging at Jongdae’s own mask, and Jongdae figured he was about to know what it felt like to be open.

“I’ve wanted to know who you were for a long time,” Baekhyun said softly, and Jongdae left his eyes closed even after Baekhyun had pulled the cloth completely off of his head. He felt more exposed than he would’ve liked to admit. Baekhyun continued, “For some reason, it makes me happy to know it was you who’ve foiled all of my plans.”

Jongdae opened his eyes at that, gazing at Baekhyun. He asked again, more softly this time, “Why did you become a villain?”

Baekhyun blinked and turned his gaze to the night sky and said with a small shrug, “Some people are just meant to be bad people. I’m one of them.”

Jongdae wanted to call bullshit on that but then decided not to. Instead, he smiled and cupped Baekhyun’s cheeks like he’d dreamed about doing for nearly two years (give or take a few months), leaned down, and whispered,

“Do you have any weaknesses?”

Baekhyun immediately lightened at that, a grin splitting his face in two. He blinked coyly at Jongdae, and Jongdae had to smother his laughter at that. Baekhyun just winked at him and leaned in closer.

“Why don’t you find out for yourself, hm?”

Turned out, Baekhyun really did have a weakness.

And it was Jongdae’s kisses.
