Sehun was devious, Baekhyun thought with a scowl, and Really Fucking Tall. It was unfair, honestly, because not only was he tall, but he was still young, and that meant he had room to grow.
And room to grow for Sehun only meant more teasing in the future for Baekhyun.
Baekhyun glared at Sehun when Sehun refused to give him his notebook back, and Sehun just winked at him, as if they were playing a fucking game. “Come on,” Sehun goaded, and Baekhyun wished he could just punch him in the face and be done with it. Sehun waved the notebook over Baekhyun’s head teasingly. “You aren’t even trying to get it.”
“Give me a second,” Baekhyun said dryly, completely unamused. “Let me just go fetch a fucking ladder from the janitor and then I’ll get it.”
Sehun had the nerve to laugh at that, as if tickled by what Baekhyun had said. Baekhyun thought he was a little shit. Honestly, what junior would treat his senior with such disrespect like this?
Thankfully, Baekhyun’s best friend rounded the corner and saw that Sehun was up to his usual bullying antics. Chanyeol grabbed Baekhyun’s notebook from Sehun’s hands with a grin, ignoring Sehun’s little protest, and presented it with unnecessary flourish to Baekhyun.
“Here, Your Royal Shortness,” Chanyeol said graciously. Baekhyun just eyed his best friend in annoyance, snatched his notebook peevishly, and stalked down the hallways as fast as his short legs could take him.
Baekhyun really hated tall people.
“Sehun only teases you this much because you react to it,” Suho told him wisely when Baekhyun began his usual rant at their lunch table. Baekhyun stabbed at the fish he’d gotten, glaring fiercely at the table across the floor where Sehun sat with Kim Jongin, Kim Jongdae, and Huang Zitao. Sehun was laughing, as per usual. It was amazing that the school thought him as cool and calm when all Baekhyun could see was an immature child. Suho observed him for a moment, rolled his eyes, and said, “Exactly like that.”
Baekhyun stabbed his fork in Suho’s direction. “Don’t even start,” he warned. Suho just held up both of his hands in surrender, wisely choosing to keep his mouth shut even if he was looking at Baekhyun with a raised brow. When he was sure that Suho wasn’t going to say anything more, he picked up his water and took a sip.
“Please,” Kyungsoo scoffed, clearly ignoring the ‘shut up or I might just stab you’ vibes coming off of Baekhyun as his chopsticks plucked at his noodles. “He’s teasing you because he likes you.”
Baekhyun nearly spat out his water when he heard that. Chanyeol, who’d been texting the entire time (probably to his monthly fling), started to cackle. Baekhyun stared at Kyungsoo incredulously, wondering where the hell he’d gotten that idea from.
“You can’t not tell me you haven’t noticed,” Kyungsoo said when he caught Baekhyun’s look. Then Kyungsoo seemed to realize that Baekhyun had no idea what he was talking about, and gave him The Look, which strongly suggested Baekhyun was an idiot.
“I think he’s just a bully,” Suho offered, and Baekhyun turned to him, suddenly worried.
“You’re just as oblivious as I am,” Baekhyun said, in a horrified trance. Chanyeol, the idiot, was still laughing up a storm at their conversation, though a swift elbow to the ribs from Kyungsoo finally caused the laughter to putter down. Shaken, Baekhyun blinked, eyes wide when he turned back to Kyungsoo. “Do you really think that? You aren’t joking, right?”
Kyungsoo just stared at him. “Do I look like I’m joking?”
Baekhyun squinted at him. “I can never tell with you.” Kyungsoo just sighed, as if dealing with him were tiring. Baekhyun was offended; here he was, trying to get an honest answer out of Kyungsoo, and Kyungsoo just made it all seem so trivial.
Which this wasn’t. Honestly.
“No, Baekhyun,” Kyungsoo said slowly, looking exasperated. “I am not joking with you.”
And Baekhyun took his word for it. Kyungsoo was, after all, a lot smarter than him.
Baekhyun stared down at his food, slightly queasy. Oh Sehun, he thought despairingly. Oh Sehun.
Every time Sehun tried to bully him, Baekhyun would start to react, then remember Kyungsoo’s words and stop. Baekhyun couldn’t help it; he was just a really transparent person when it came to his thoughts and feelings. And right now, he was confused.
He’d stare at Sehun, and Sehun would stare back, tilting his head like a quizzical puppy, probably wondering why his target wasn’t responding. They’d stay like that, staring at each other with equally bewildered expressions painting their faces, until Sehun would, in a daze, hand Baekhyun’s stuff back to him without a word. Baekhyun would take his things, continue staring, and when the bell rang, he’d turn and hightail it to the fine arts wing.
And he’d feel Sehun’s stare burning into his back every step of the way.
One night, at a party, Baekhyun found Sehun sitting outside near the pool, legs encased by water. He was completely dry, which was weird, because Baekhyun had expected him to be one of the guys who’d take the opportunity to go for a swim (regardless of if he had the right clothes for it or not). Baekhyun couldn’t really say that though, not anymore, because he’d realized all those weeks ago that maybe he really didn’t know Sehun at all.
He hesitantly approached and sat down next to Sehun, feeling slightly awkward about what Sehun would do when he saw him. Would he revert back into bully-mode? Would he, miracle granted, actually just welcome his company and talk to him for once? Baekhyun hoped it was the latter. He found that he really wanted to learn who the real Oh Sehun was behind that mischievous facade.
Sehun, to his complete and utter surprise, glanced at him, smiled slightly, and continued to stare at the water licking at his kneecaps.
“Hi,” Baekhyun said, and laughed quietly to himself. Since when had he ever felt nervous about talking to someone? Probably never.
“Hey,” Sehun replied, almost hesitantly, and shot him an indecipherable look from the corner of his eyes. “What’s up?”
Baekhyun wanted to ask him a lot of things, wanted to talk to him about a lot of things. Conversations and thoughts whirred around in his head at a chaotic speed, and (of course) when he opened his mouth to say one thing, another came out.
“Do you like me?” he asked (more like blurted) and then sighed at himself. His mouth really had no filter, did it?
Sehun turned to stare at him then, studying him closely, as if trying to gauge something. Baekhyun resisted the urge to fidget around, and instead stared back, studying the way the water reflected on Sehun’s surprisingly clean face.
“Yeah,” Sehun finally said, shoulders bouncing in a shrug. “What about it?”
He didn’t seem all too worried, but Baekhyun caught the trace of vulnerability in his voice and smiled. So this was who Oh Sehun was, huh?
Baekhyun pushed himself to his feet and, with a wicked little smile, wiped them on Sehun’s shirt. Ignoring Sehun’s exclaim of surprise, he skittered away and winked.
“I’ll see you Monday,” he called, smile large on his face.
After a moment’s hesitation, Sehun laughed slightly and said, “Yeah.”
Two months later -
“Come down here,” Baekhyun demanded. Sehun smirked down at him in response, as if to say “shortie”, and Baekhyun elbowed him in the gut. Sehun crumpled over like a leaf, and Baekhyun grinned victoriously.
“That’s better,” he cooed, and kissed Sehun smack on the mouth. He could feel Sehun smiling against his lips, and Baekhyun wrapped his arms around Sehun’s waist.
Baekhyun still hated tall people. But maybe, just maybe, he’d grown inexplicably fond of that tall person Oh Sehun.
