I've been meaning to post this album for ages, and now it's finally here.
I first heard of
Anaïs Mitchell listening to her beautiful The Brightness. And one of the songs that called my attention in it was "Hades & Persephone", a gorgeous song that is, literally, a conversation between the characters in the title.
So imagine my pure joy when I learned that she took inspiration in said song and made a whole album based on the Orpheus myth: Hadestown was created, and I was in love.
Anaïs' own
website describe Hadestown as "a folk opera based on the orpheus myth and set in a post-apocalyptic american depression era". She called
some friends to "play" the main characters -- Ani DiFranco's Persephone kills me with her perfect, perfect voice --, and the result is amazing.
I couldn't possibly point any favourites , but I confess I have a soft spot for "Wedding Song", the first in the album. I love this song so much that if I ever get married, this will be the song playing in the ceremony, no doubt about it.
Long story short, I highly recommend this. If you have some time, listen to it. It's worth it.
