Bridges

I've been sick for over a week. First it was my throat, then I lost my voice, then it was my runny nose, now it's a cough and stuffy nose. I'm trying not to let it get me down, but its been hard because it's affected my sleep, which affects my mood, which affects my thoughts, and everything jumbles up. But no matter how shitty I feel, I still manage to end up being positive about how the day turned out. I've finally started to relax and my new year's resolution is playing out. (Worry less, enjoy more.)

Saturday night, I was looking through my wallet for a business card when I found a tiny folded piece of paper. I paused and contemplated whether I should open this little paper. Perhaps it was something from my past that I had forgetten about and if I opened it now and remembered I'd become nostalgic. I pondered this for less than a second, disregarded the thought, and opened it.

It was a quote by David Russell.
"The hardest thing to learn in life is which bridge to cross and which to burn."

Honestly I feel like my life is a movie sometimes. What were the odds that I would've opened this quote on this tiny piece of paper that I stuffed in my wallet many months ago right at a time in my life when I actually needed it?

We decide which bridges to cross and which to burn. But what happens after we've decided? Is it so easy to cross the bridge we wish to cross or to burn another? Is it only possible to cross one bridge after another has been burned?

Sometimes bridges lead to more than just the future. Bridges lead to people. I know I've burned a good few bridges from my past which lead to people I never wish to befriend again. And some bridges have been burned but rebuilt. Some have grown rusty.

I must say, I don't agree with Mr. Russell here. It's not which to cross and which to burn that's important. It having the courage to either take the step or light the match.
