What Makes Music "Country?"

This question is inspired by seeing the "new" Bon Jovi on Saturday Night Live. You can't argue about the country feel of the song (even if you were to take away the fiddle player), but we couldn't put our fingers on exactly what made it feel that way. Well, I believe they just put out an album aimed at the Country audience. But sometimes, what makes it country is only what radio system it debuts on.

I was wondering that myself the other night at my pt-job, they had the Country Music Awards on and Sheryl Crowe was a presenter, I said "why is she on there, she's not country?" and my coworker (who was the one who was actually interested in the CMA) said "well, she sang that duet with Chris Rock and that was country."

Really? That didn't strike me as country at all. In my mind (or ear rather) country has that almost exaggerated twang in the singing voice I find so irritating. I love hearing a banjo or fiddle playing in folk, bluegrass, or zydeco music, but I rarely enjoy listening to "country" music.
