television

On television, when a teenager goes through a hard, scary or difficult time that is in any way serious, the parents always seem to come to the child's aid, despite whatever other struggles or arguments they happen to be going through at the time. And the child never seems shocked by it.

I'm remembering a night when I was 15 or 16, coming home after a night of grief and despair and heart-break, coming through the door angry and scared and feeling very raw against the sharp edges of society, and needing, truly NEEDING protection, reassurance and love, and fully expecting not to receive it.

But I did get it.

Which was almost just as bad.
