What has happened to time?! I feel like two days ago I was in New York enjoying pretending to really be in the theater world and now I've just finished my first week of school.....WHAT!
So I haven't posted in a really long time and I'd love to make a gigantic NYC post but there's just way too much stuffs that happened this summer to talk about here. So I'll start with coming HOME from the city. I flew back on the fourteenth (a thursday). Friday morning I picked up my key for my DORM ROOM - yes I'm an RA in Alice Lloyd this year! Crazy exciting! Anywho, I moved some of my stuff in but not really because my cousin's wedding was Saturday which forced me to miss the first evening of training at Lloyd. The wedding was fun if only because I liked my dress. Otherwise, none of my relatives are into dancing - even bad wedding dancing - so it was kinda lame for me but still nice to see everyone after a summer away. Then Sunday I woke up bright and early to get to the dorm to be able to go up to Burseley on North Campus to have our training retreat. CLE (the retreat) was a LOT of fun. I fell in love with the ResStaff in Lloyd and got really really excited for the coming year although I totally knew that as soon as school started I'd never ever see them. I know how it goes. Well, after training we had ONE day off and then more training on central campus right up until the residents moved in. SO it's been non-stop crazy AND with the amount of time I've been here - my room STILL isn't completely set up. Cause I'm lame and don 't feel like finishing/don't have time to.
Well, I'm excited for my RA-ing for a number of reasons a) free room b) free UNLIMITED meal plan c) great location in the middle of both Central Campus and North d) great ResStaff and e) FREE ROOM/BOARD. I'm sad that my ResStaff job has forced me to lose my work-study but thankful that Jenny was able to keep me on for the Saturday morning shifts. I really love the Box Office especially with the staffing changes that have been made PLUS it means I still get comps!!! Sadly though the residents on my hall are all sophmores and above so they have their own friends and keep to themselves mostly :(. ALSO Lauren (my bestie bestie best fiance) is living in Couzens (aka NEXT DOOR) heck yeah heck yeah! I'm so excited we can have meals together at least - one sure fire way I'll be making sure to see her.
So this semester I'm really buckling down with arts management and have a new found focus for my schooling. I'm taking 18 credits again but what's new. Lets talk about my first-ish impressions of each:
- Shakespeare: I mean it's Ralph. Ralph Williams. Love of my life. Smartest most amazing person ever EVER EVER! It could possibly kick my butt seeing as how we'll be 'averaging' a play a week and reading Shakespeare has not always been the easiest for me despite my mad love for his work. I have to stress the fact that Shakespeare wrote for performance not things meant to be read. I love my discussion leader so far and find it hilarious that there are about 6 Julie's/Julia's in one discussion.
- Intro to Stage Management: So I came late the first day and was very afraid of Nancy Uffner although people really like her. After talking to her she seems nice though - intimadating but like she can be fun if she likes you. I'm sad that I haven't been assigned to ASM-ing Rent so we'll see what comes of it. Also WHO HAS A TEXTBOOK AND COURSEPACK FOR STAGE MANAGEMENT! Ridiculous - learn by doing I feel not be reading for something like Stage Managing.
- Accounting: Well, it's a large class in Mason Hall. I was in the back and couldn't read the overhead and so began to fidget - a lot. I probably really annoyed the poor boy next to me because I dropped my pencil like twenty times out of boredom and he had to pick it up for me. :/ Anyway it seems like it may be an easy class but I could be wrong. Plus side - free online text book :) Also the professor has an amazing southern accent.
-TAP III: What can I say? ABSOLUTELY THE BEST THING EVER!!!!!!!
-Intro to Design: Slightly nervous for this one too because it's all based on art projects. I'm no artist! I love Rob Murphy though and all the people in the class (a class full of BTAS!) The first day of class we glued spaghetti to paper for an hour and a half!
-Intro to Playwriting: SOOO SCARY! Oyamo is the most fantastic person ever - very sixties. HOWEVER we will be writing 10 pages of our plays a week PLUS reading two plays a week. The coursepack cost a whooping $85....$85 for unbound photocopies of about twenty different plays and articles about those plays. WHAT?!
-Voice: I'm taking for a new teacher this year so I'm a little nervous. I worked just so well with Kelly the past two years that I am interested to see how this will go! She seems nice to work with though. She's making me do other, non-musical theater songs!!!! CRAZY but I'm actually glad. It'll be good to try new things again. So I have to do a foreign language piece, a SPIRITUAL (heck yesssss) and one of my choosing (a musical theater song yet to be determined...any good ideas for a mezzo like me?) Plus I really love the studio aspect of the class - even though it'll only be twice a semester. I really need to get over singing in front of others - especially ones I think are more talented than me.
ANd UNOFFICIALLY meaning I'm not getting credit for it - I'm doing Dance Workshop which is a time on fridays/whenever where students (MTs) decide I want to choreograph a dance and others (MTs, Stephanie and me) say I really wish I could dance more but I just can't fit any more classes into my schedule. We unite and organize and the choreographers create for the dancers and at the end of the semester there's a mini showcase and all are happy YAY! So the problem is that I shouldn't overextend myself BUT like seven of the routines sounded interesting/fun and I want to do them all all all. I'd feel bad if I didn't do Susan's and I WANT to do Susan's but the reason I wanted to do workshop is because I couldn't fit anything BUT tap into my schedule and then to do it and be tapping kind of defeats the perhaps.
Well, I should go because I'm on duty tonight and need to head down to the security meeting soon but I'm super excited for the semester/year but hope not too burn myself out.
