This weekend i flew to Chicago for my last Lasallian Volunteers retreat. It was super sad to see everyone go, but it's also reassuring to know that so many people are doing so many good things and that the likelyhood that i'll see some if not most of them again is fairly high. The retreat center was AMAZING. it was a two story log cabin Chalet that was built by the founder of the American Greetings Card Company and was later sold to the Brothers. It was so relaxing, beautiful, and quiet. there was a little pond that i went canoeing on twice, basketball courts, tennis courts, a field, swimming pool (though a bit cold this weekend), fantastic food, great people, lots of free time and reflecting time. overall, a very nice weekend with beautiful weather.
Sunday night we came back from the retreat center and stayed at one of the Chicago volunteer houses. the house itself was fantastic and their school simply stunning. it's very small (only a few classrooms on one hall), but the spirit is alive and well there. There are beautfiul murals on the walls and there is a sense of love and comfort in the place. two of the students took us on a tour of the school which was a nice added touch.
last night we had a cookout at our house with our new volunteer's family. Christina just joined our community to work at the United Nations for the summer. her mom, dad, and brother (who lives in the city) all came out to dinner. a good time was had by all.
in other news:
I have a job!
Br. Chris and i spoke last thursday and if all goes as planned i'll be teaching three sophomore American Lit classes and one junior Brit Lit class at Christian Brothers High School starting August 3. No, i don't know how much it pays, but i really don't care because it will be more than i'm making now. Even though i'm only teaching four classes, i'll get full pay, benefits, and grad school is fully covered. I'll probably wait until the spring to start grad school, but i'll keep you up to date as things develop. He was supposed to put information in the mail on thursday, so hopefully i'll get it sometime today or tomorrow! I don't know if i'm excited yet, but i think i will be once i actually sign something and it becomes official. It's kinda weird to know what's next and to not have to worry about it anymore. at the same time, it's strange to know that once i sign, i'm committed. Don't know how i feel about that yet?
I'm very glad it's a short week! This weekend we're having another party at our house to celebrate it's 100th anniversary and sunday i'm hoping to go to the brooklyn museum of art again because there's a monet exhibit opening. My seniors are all done with classes, so it should be interesting from here on out. there's still so much school left and all of the teachers have stopped giving work. This makes my life difficult! i'm hoping for a quick four days!
