Busy busy busy with various aspects of producing my work and have had little time to feed to the machine. I have now officially fired all of the electric kilns in our department and mixed like 9 things of clay, so I have pretty much resolved these processes in my head. All of these experiences I am finding to be rather "zen" as Ken would say. They are all a series of steps that demand a certain recipe that you follow while your mind centers itself, it's relaxing and at the same time it brings a sense of accomplishment as if I am actually doing "real work."
On a sad note, I received my second "rejection letter" of the year yesterday from this photo competition I entered, but all is not lost as they sent me a free magazine along with the letter so that's kind of cool. At least it's not my rejection from the Art Institute of Chicago. For some reason I feel that one coming, and it's probably going to suck. On the note of grad schools, I've been working in a particularly large scale as of late in preparation for a solo show I may be having downtown later this year after I graduate. Thus far it is only one piece, but It will stand approximately 150 inches upon completion and I am quite enthusiastic about it's potential as an extension of my current work in terms of concept as well as a step into the environmental. I have this whole big vision for my second year of grad school having a body of approximately 10-20 of these pieces and installing them in Black Rock Desert at the Burning Man Festival, Fall 2006. Thinking about it, I would also like to do something like this on a beach as well. Needless to say I am quite excited about my current work. It is a massive structural challenge, incredibly involved and absolutely consuming just like I like it.
My powerbook arrived the other day and I have to say it, Apple designs the most beautiful and amazing consumer products. That may sound like some sort of corporate plug, but really it's just the way it is. Just last night I finally managed to finish transferring all of my photos, mp3s, programs and movies and I still have 70+ GB on my 100 GB hard drive. Going from a 40 GB PC hard drive this is pretty amazing. Did I mention how cute it is? I should be getting the Axio bag I ordered for it later today and when I do I'll post pictures of the computer and the bag both. On that note I have contemplated eliminating the photo section of my website. I've considered it and I worry that more people will go to my site and learn about me rather than learning about my work. Not that I don't want people to "know" me, but I certainly don't want them to know me and not my work. Some redesign may be in order, I suppose we will see.
