Came home on Wednesday night (National Cat Day) to my Kindle Fire in the sink. Specifically in a pot with three inches of water that I was letting soak. I'd left it on the counter with my iPad, which was fortunately too wide for the pot and was lying on top of it. No idea when the cat knocked it over, of course, but I was hopeful it'd only been a minute, when she'd hopped on top of the fridge to greet me.
I resisted the urge to cry, wiped off the exterior and tried to turn it on. (Nope!) I took to the Fire with a can'o'air and then headed out to Target to buy some rice and see if that old tip might work. What did I have to lose, other than $1.04?
As an aside, I actually don't use the Kindle a ton anymore. There's one super awesome word game that isn't available on iPad (Word Heroin), and I prefer the smaller tablet when I leave the house, which I then only read on for the most part, as it's WiFi only. But still. D-: Breaking electronics suck.
So I put the Fire in a bag of rice (totally not code) from Wednesday night until this morning. Woke up, removed the Fire from the rice and wiped off the rice dust. I held my breath, and attempted to power it up. I muttered to myself, "this totally isn't gonna work." as it...turned on! Shut UP, it totally worked! \o/ Even composed this entry on it, because I COULD.
It's looking like the case it was in is a goner, though. Ironically THAT is not recovering very well. Still waterlogged and it dried out wider than the normal shape. I'd much rather replace that, though.
Needlessly long story short? Pretty sure rice has magic abilities.
