Neal resumed his seat at the side of Peter's hospital bed, opposite Elizabeth. "Hughes is putting me under house arrest until you're back on duty--but he's letting me stay at your place. I have to leave with Jones now, though."

Peter's eyes were drooping, but he nodded. "Okay."

"Think of this as a mitzvah for me, Neal," Elizabeth added. "If you hold down the homefront, I can stay here."

"Yeah," Peter said. "We need you to take care of Satch. You can't walk him, so just feed him and let him into the yard. And then we need--" he broke off to catch his breath. "We need you to make calls. El--"

"I'll give you a list," she finished, flashing Neal a warm smile. "Let all the relatives know what's happened, and then keep them updated, ok?"

Neal blinked as he imagined cold-calling the Burkes' relations. "Of course. I'll put them at ease--they won't feel like they're getting the news from a stranger."

"Oh, honey, all our relatives know who you are," Elizabeth assured him. "They know you're family. Listen, my sister might come to Brooklyn. Give her the guestroom and take our room. If anyone else wants to come, make arrangements for a hotel."

"Right. So, ah, this is what it's like to be a Burke? Managing everyone and taking care of everything?"

Peter grunted. "What was your first clue? Do you want out?"

Neal grinned and shook his head. "No--you're stuck with me."
