...on the movie stuff. Mere is resigned to not seeing Sherlock Holmes, and hoped we could see it ourselves, and is probably going to go see Avatar in 3D early on New Year's Day.

I'll try not to make any broad statements about a movie I haven't seen, but what I've heard about the new Sherlock Holmes movie just makes me ask why bother? If you want Sherlock Holmes, why not read Doyle's rather than see any Hollywood interpretation? Or if you must go video, Jeremy Brett.
Is Mere old enough? You've always said she's an advanced reader. Would she find Victorian prose too arcane and dull? Possibly.
I can only project my youth on the question. When I was a bit older than Mere, my mother foisted a child's edition of _Oliver Twist_ on me. It put me off Dickens for a decade. In my youth, I liked a lot of reading material that was, honestly, crap. My parents tried to suppress it, only increasing my interest. That would argue for Mere seeing the movie, but also reading some of the stories, and learning the difference for herself.
Mind you, I think you'll do a much better job of "selling" books than my mother did. She contended you should read the Great Books because they in some nebulous way Made You A Better Person. Kind of like mental broccoli. Meanwhile, she plowed through thick bestsellers without getting any apparent enjoyment out of them. You, on the other hand, love books, and I know you'll try to convey that.
Whether the movie's too violent or appropriate for her age, I'll pass. The original stories didn't need today's version of action-adventure for suspense. When Doyle's Holmes took the extreme measure of taking a gun with him, you knew things were getting serious.

She's found via Harry Potter that the movies are only a pale shadow of the books. She's working her way through HP4 right now for school credit.
