No, this isn’t an advertisement as such.  Both the US and UK versions of Amazon are running DVD sales, and I’m listing out my ooh-that-would-be-interesting list for my purposes (and your edification, in case you have similar interests).

Note that I have multi-region / NTSC and PAL reading DVD players in the house, and that the UK PAL stuff won’t be ( Read more... )

I do hope they release the complete Gilbert & Sullivan in the States. The PBS shows were one of my introductions to G&S, and I never bought the VHS version because they left out things. (Cox and Box is valuable even if it's Sullivan without GIlbert.)

yeah - saw Cox and Box years ago at Ohio Light Opera in Wooster, courtesy of Mr. Erichsen.

They did release the "Complete" G&S on DVD in the States. I have a copy of it. It does not include Utopia, Ltd. or the Grand Duke. And although they filmed Cox and Box and Trial by Jury, I don't believe either of those are included in the released set, either.

Here's what's in the US Amazon set; compare it up to the UK one.

British set includes the Trial by Jury and Cox and Box that are missing from the US set. Otherwise, they look to have the same contents.

As you say, it's not really "Complete."

I want my Cox and Box!

Quite correct. The PBS "complete" version did indeed leave out the last two Savoy operas (and Thespis of course). Also right that they broadcast _Cox and Box_ and _Trial by Jury_. I have the same DVD set, which I've luckily been able to augment with Cox/Trial dubbed from a 20+ year old VHS recording off the air.

I thought those two short operettas were about the best overall performances of the whole series.

I don't know...separated twins with similar names - sounds too unlikely!
