Heirloom seeds information 2009:

Apr 08, 2009 09:30

Susan, Mere and I have had very good luck in the recent past with heirloom seeds and plants, and we’re looking at doing some gardening with them this year.  For everyone’s benefit, here’s a list of seed outfits and information; I’m sure the more expert sorts out there can add their stuff to this.

Susan wants to plant the following:
  • Beets (golden or chioggia - the striped internally sort).  The family loves these varieties. including Meredith.
  • Asparagus (I was going to go for Mary Washington, but I’m willing to listen to any other advice…)
  • Peppers (sweet sorts - this is Susan’s idea, for our family-blend chili sauce, made from my mom’s recipe, and I’m not sure what sort she’s looking for or color)
  • Summer Squash (We love the Zephyr variety; the only place I’m finding them so far is at Johnny’s Seeds)
  • Tomatoes - the big casino.  We had good results last year with Caspian and Abraham Lincoln plants that we purchased at a local farmer’s market, and the same farmers suggested the Rutgers tomato for canning purposes.
