This topic is one that is constantly on my mind while I'm watching TV or a movie. It is one that influences the way other people think of and react toward homosexual men in their everyday lives. It is one that has the potential to liberate a minority from being oppressed, beaten, and hated against or the potential to completely destroy the lives of thousands of hardworking, honest, and kind people.
Homosexuals in mass media are portrayed with every stereotype they can think of. Whether its Jack from "Will and Grace" or Damien from "Mean Girls", gays are constantly portrayed as overly feminine men or 'women trapped in men's bodies". I find this portrayal highly offensive.
There are many other movies out there that are, of course, gay themed that show gays in a different light. Such as the movie "Beautiful Thing", where they characters are just two normal men who fall in love with each other. These movies though aren't targeted toward the general public. "Beautiful Thing" is a gay romance movie and will most likely only be watched by other homosexuals and their female friends.
If the stereotypical portrayal of gays were to stop and be replaced by a more sensible role for a gay character, I believe that it could most defiantly change the way people react toward homosexuals and push the equality movement even further.
