seventh real day of vacation

A week in Alaska. Feels like a lot more than that.

Slept in, lazed about the hotel, enjoyed the continental breakfast. Being allergic to eggs, their oatmeal-and-bagel spread is the most satisfying breakfast I've had since we've been here. Then off to the UAF Museum, where we took an introductory ice sculpting class. It was a lot of fun, and surprisingly hard work. Granted, the temperature was a balmy +13F, but I was pretty much sweating by the time it was over with. The pro sculpters did the chainsawing we requested, and we did the rest with chisels and a power sander. I think for a first attempt, it wasn't a bad job:

We took a lot of pictures, and then went to a pretty nice Thai place called Lemongrass. Thai food is thick on the ground here. Surprisingly, Japanese is almost impossible to find. After lunch, back to UAF to take a few more pictures (some of the first batch didn't come out, including the ones of our own piece), and then back to the hotel. Showers, TV, naps. Long, languid naps.

Vacationing has afforded us the luxury to spend hours deciding where to have dinner, and last night was no exception. We really wanted sushi, but that's not a good idea around here. The locals buy their sushi at the Fred Meyer. So instead, we decided to check out the hotel restaurant, Lavelle's, where Anami and I had possibly the best fish (potato-crusted Salmon for her, Halibut on rice for me) we've ever had. The cheesecake (which I didn't try) looked pretty, too.

We had big plans to go out to Mt. Aurora again last night, but by the time we waited out our food coma, it was late late againa and we didn't quite feel like going. It's ok, though; the trip isn't just about the lights; it's about trying new things, and about luxury. I hacked around a little while Anami watched Pay it Forward, and we headed off to bed about 1 (that's 5 am Bloomington time).

Sitting in the cafe at the hotel, doing a little reading while Anami journals. Our flight goes out at 2 am; it's going to be a long day.

Okee-doke, one more day to go: our final day, and our travel. Hope to get it up soon.
