I went through most of my keepsakes yesterday, throwing out a lot of crap. But today I found another box tucked away, and this one gives me pause.
I found a "time capsule" I made in like second grade. The outside is a soup can with a label I designed in art class. It says "Bartholomew's Clam Chowder," and I'm pretty sure everyone in my class made soup can labels as inspired by Andy Warhol. Inside are:
- a baseball card for Andy Van Slyke. Second grade was the last time I enjoyed playing baseball, mostly because it wasn't competitive at all and the coaches pitched. Andy Van Slyke played for the Pirates at the time, which I think was also the last time the Pirates had a decent season.
- a bunch of Starburst wrappers. These were my favorite candy, and I remember I would get a pack every time we went to the Science Center. (I'm sure this didn't happen all that often, but it happened enough times. I loved the Science Center.) Every time I got Starburst, I would save the wrappers and put them in a bug jar in my room.
- a green crayon. Green is my favorite color.
- two chess pieces I made out of Legos. I remember doing this, but I still think it was a pretty weird thing to do. I wasn't that into chess, although I was into making things ouf of Legos and then never taking them apart.
- a hot wheels car, that I'm pretty sure changed color in warm water. I don't know why this was important to me.
- a tiny screw. I have no idea why I put this in.
- a beat-up rubber christmas tree with a face that fits on your finger. I don't get this either.
It sometimes disturbs me how good my memory is. Also, I was a pretty weird kid. Now I don't know whether to keep this for another 16 years.
