So Google released this thing which lets you broadcast your current geographical position at all times (provided you're using Google maps on your smart phone).  It's called Google Latitude Everyone is all ambivalent (or even upset) about this, but I think we just need to figure out when it's good to use this sort of thing.   Like when you want ( Read more... )

But how would they know you were wandering around with nothing to do? You might be wandering around with a new girl/boyfriend and really don't want to be interrupted with phone calls. Or, enjoying some quality alone-time.

I'm not upset or anything about this, but I can't see ever using it. Even in the internet age, I like maintaining some semblance of privacy.

They would know b/c you've twittered/fb status is "_____ is looking for stuff to do tonight."

But yeah. But I do think location stuff on the order of cities is a good idea. Like if I'm gonna be in Chicago for a week, but I don't know who else lives there right now.

OK, I guess I do buy the usefulness of it on a city basis. Is that as much as it would do? Because that wouldn't freak me out particularly, and I could see where I might be curious.

But wouldn't twittering "In Chicago, looking for stuff to do tonight" serve the same purpose?

I think this is what Dopplr is supposed to do, and it talks to Facebook (and maybe other systems too?). I just tried it for the first time in a year or so, and it looks pretty good.
