When people believe that writing a letter to a a congressman or carrying a sign outside the White House or turning off your lights for a few minutes accomplishes anything, they remove the energy needed to really get things done.

Last week, over 1,000 Courage Campaign members wrote to Sen. Kohl, asking him to become the 10th and final Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee to support repeal. Many told Sen. Kohl that their votes for his re-election next year were at stake, as well as personal stories about why DOMA repeal is so important to them...

Well, we just heard from Sen. Kohl’s office: he will become the 10th and final vote we need on the Senate Judiciary Committee to pass S. 598, the Respect for Marriage Act, out of committee. Off we go!

Sure, you can't change Rand Paul's mind about the beauty of tax cuts, even if every single Kentucky voter wanted him to vote to raise taxes. But a relatively small number of letters can change a Senator or Congressperson's position from noncommittal to supportive. And in a situation where a single vote can be key (as in this case), that can have a lot of effect.
