Lies, Damned Lies and Simple Math

  • We spent 17.3% of our GDP on health care in 2009, up from 16.2% in 2008, an increase of 6.8%. LA Times
  • That's about 2.5 trillion dollars.
  • Which works out to very close to $8000 per capita.
  • We spend approximately a trillion dollars more than the otherwise most expensive industrialized country would spend on health care using their system on our population

A recent article in a local paper noted that it was much cheaper to fly round trip to Seoul and have surgical procedures done than to have them done in the US, and that many Korean-Americans are now doing so. Some insurers are even investigating doing this.

Money making idea: Put medical ships staffed with Korean and other highly trained medical personnel 12 miles off the US coast. Turn a 20 hour trip into a 15 minute helicopter ride for a large portion of the American population.

Still, I suppose the cost of maintaining a ship is really high, and you really got to wonder about doing operations while a ship is rocking, however slightly.
