Speaking at American Economic Association’s mammoth yearly gathering, experts from a range of political leanings were in surprising agreement when it came to the chances for a robust and sustained expansion: They are slim.
These are the same people who accurately predicted the continued boom in real estate through the end of the decade, the current economic recovery from the 2008 mild recession, the many beneficial effects deregulation of financial markets would have on the US and World economy, the run-up in stock price of such firms as Lehman Brothers and Washington Mutual, and the current unemployment rate of 5.6%.
