#17 God Help the Child by Toni Morrison

Jun 29, 2015 00:32

When Lula Ann is born, her mother is appalled. The girl was dark skinned; very dark. Her family has always been proud of their light skin, sometimes light enough to pass as white. When he sees Lula Ann, her father leaves the family, convinced this cannot be his child.

As Lula Ann grows up she years for love from her mother. Her life intertwines with that of Booker, who also suffered hurts in his own childhood and family. The two learn that dishonesty and partial truths can bring past hurts into the present.

I enjoyed this book far more than previous books by Toni Morrison, although some of the elements were simply too far-fetched for my taste.
