"If the Tigers find that hitter on the open market, it most likely won't be Barry Bonds, contrary to the rumor mill that links baseball's potential home-run king with his old manager. While fellow ex-Leyland pupil turned disgruntled Yankee Gary Sheffield continues to generate interest on the trading block, Detroit isn't expected to take on the 38-year-old if it requires giving up a prominent young starter or signing Sheffield to a multi-year extension. Leyland has a reputation for handling star players, but the Tigers will not take that on if it threatens to take focus away from the team."
Okay, ignoring that first sentence, the previous paragraph was quite comical considering the Tigers did both of the things this article said they would not do to get Sheffield. They got rid of three prospects, one a future starter and another a future closer (but Zumaya has that job locked for the future, so the closer-to-be was expendible anyway), AND they signed Sheffield to a multi-year extension (albeit two years). Even funnier is the fact that statement is from the Detroit Tigers official website.
