Adapted from the manga of the same name,(more like loosely adapted) it tells the story of ashiya mizuki who comes all the way from america to look for her idol who unfortunately studies in an all-boy school. In the dorama however, Mizuki was feeling guilty because she was the cause (or she thought she was) for causing Izumi Sanno not being able to high jump anymore. From the flashback scenes, Sanno was helping Mizuki escape from some thugs in US, and in the middle of it he hurt his leg/ankle and therefore not able to jump anymore...
Mizuki wants Sanno to smile again and in this case it means to be able to high jump, therefore enters Ohsaka Gakuen cross dresses as a boy and as fate has it.. is roomie with Sanno. Along the way, she befriends with homo-phobic Nakatsu who likes her, understands the meaning of friendship, youth and obviously some dorm rivalries..

My VIEWS
The first few eps of hana kimi lacks direction, in my opinion... That is it's beating about the bushes, it only starts to pick up its pace towards the end (from ep 7/8 onwards)
A lot of fan service (ie half naked actors)
I've watched the taiwanese one before this, read the manga before and though it does not follow closely to the manga.. it is watchable.
The producer omits most of the Sanno-Mizuki moments from the manga, and in the dorama there's more Nakatsu-Mizuki moments.. So you can't really tell how Sanno changed to a more open person towards the end..
I love Toma's Nakatsu> him talking to himself scenes are funny,,, it's even funnier when sanno watch silently when Nakatsu's performing his antics.. His personality in the first ep was a bit off but at least he makes up for from ep 2 onwards.. So the casting did a great job in putting Toma in charge of Nakatsu.
I was quite dissppointed in the casting of Nanba Minami though, from the manga although he's a playboy, he exudes a certain charm that distinguish him from other playboys.. and he's a senior ..(but errm,, i don't know )
Shun as Sanno is also ok... and i do like his friendship with Nakatsu. Though both personalities are poles apart, they make a very good hing-tai ( brotherhood) pair. You don't see them apologising to each other after each arguement they had rite.. It's just a nod and arguement resolved kinda thing.. :)
Overall, this dorama is OK.. you just need to overlook all the foolishness and put up with it for the first few eps and then things start picking up from ep 7 onwards.
And if you wanna compare the taiwanese version or this japanese version, i guess both has its plus point (and also minus points) but Ella (mizuki in taiwanese ver) looks like a guy (too much like a guy in my opinion) cause after all Mizuki's supposed to be a pretty boy and Ella doesn't look any pretty when she's made up as a girl in the drama. Sorry Ella fans.
So if you have some time, watch this dorama about friendship, school spirit, youth & love plus a dose of foolishness..
