It was the Tuesday before Senior Prom, Kurt Hummel actually had a date to it that wasn’t Mercedes and he was puking his guts out in the middle of French class. While most of Kurt’s conscious thought was dedicated to the motions and pure revulsion that is vomiting up lunch, a small part of him was still thinking about the pure humiliation of hurling in front of all those people, most of whom he hates. It couldn’t be helped though, the urge expel the salad and cupcake he’d eaten just minutes ago came so suddenly Kurt was simply grateful he’d made it to the trashcan. Finally with a few hacking, dry-heaves he was able to stop throwing up and with a beet-red face fled to the nurse’s office.
A few minutes and some saltines later and Kurt was glad to finally be alone and vomit free in the dark back room of the nurse’s office. He could hear soft murmuring coming from under the doorway and the shuffling of feet and slamming of doors. It was amazing how busy the nurse’s office was, although with many students taking a page out of Puck’s book it should have been no surprise to Kurt how many people came to see the nurse in just a few minutes. Being a case of genuine suffering Kurt was not ushered out of the door as soon as he was given a few pain pills but allowed to lay down on one of the, surprisingly comfortable, beds and rest until he felt better. And Kurt did feel much better, it was just that anytime he attempted to stand up or face the outside world he would immediately turn green and throw himself at the nearest vomit collecting receptacle.
Humming to himself gently with his eyes closed Kurt almost missed the door to his sanctuary opening and a rather large being blocking the light from without almost immediately. What he definitely did not miss was the soft footsteps steadily drawing nearer and nearer or the smell of grass and oranges weaseling its way into his senses.
“Baby,” A voice entered into his brain and Kurt instantly recognized the voice of his boyfriend even though he still refused to open his eyes, “I heard what happened, what’s wrong?”
“You left the door open that’s what’s wrong,” Kurt deadpanned still feeling like crap even though he’d puked less than fifteen minutes before but what seemed like only a split second later the door was closed and Dave was back to his kneeling position beside the bed “I puked…in front of everyone”
“I know, Az told me. He also brought me your stuff by the way and told me to tell you that the stick of gum that’s missing is the only thing that kept him from puking everywhere too so don’t bitch at him for it,” Dave soothed setting Kurt’s things on the bed over and sat next to Kurt on his. “You haven’t been feeling sick have you?”
“I’ve been feeling really hot for about a week and I almost punched Finn in the junk yesterday because of the banana he was eating…it smelled disgusting.” Kurt said sitting up suddenly and hugging his boyfriend of over a year.
“Maybe you’ve got a virus; we should go get you tested. You’ve obviously got a headache too if you can’t even open your eyes.” Dave suggested quietly stroking Kurt’s back in a soothing gesture.
“I’d have to leave this room though,” Kurt moaned into Dave’s neck sending shivers down the other boy’s spine.
“You’ve got sunglasses in your bag; come on I’ll let you listen to Florence on the way there,” Dave coaxed now rubbing Kurt’s back and kissing his neck.
“Can we get froyo on the way back?” Kurt questioned looking up into his boyfriend’s eyes.
“Sure,” Dave said standing up and digging his cell out of his pocket, “Just let me call your dad and get him to sign us out,”
“Okay,” Kurt said sinking back into the cushion of the bed. He knew that Dave was right and that he really ought to see a doctor but he feared what it might mean for the prom night he’d planned to a T. What if the doctor told him he needed to stay home for the next week, Dave would insist that he did and sacrifice not only having his first happy high school experience as an out teen but also all the money that he himself had poured into the planning. Kurt wasn’t willing to see all his plans for that day ruined by something as silly as the stomach flu or some other curable disease. Not now that he finally had a boyfriend that loved him, friends that supported them both, and a father that was finally beginning to understand him it would be a nightmare to have to give up a night that would mean so much to all of them. Kurt also knew that it was better for him to go to see the doctor now and figure out what this was then wait and end up in the hospital; Kurt had watched his father go through that he couldn’t imagine what it would feel like for his father to have to experience the same. He had too many people counting on him to let something as serious as going from conjugation to spewing the garbage in less than three seconds go.
Finally Dave was back and after shuffling through his bag to find his sunglasses they were on their way to the parking lot. Fifth period was well on its way by the time they made it into the halls and neither boy saw a single person as they walked through the building and outside. Slipping into Kurt’s SUV Dave started the car and slid out of the parking lot with little fuss from Kurt about driving his baby, much to Dave’s surprise and worry. They were pulling up to the little clinic close to the school in no time and pushed into an exam room quicker than that.
“Hello, my name is Dr. Pierce,” A voice said as a hand pulled the door open and slid silently into the room. “What seems to be the problem?”
“I’ve been feeling ill for about a week now. I feel hot, have slight but almost constant headaches and seem to have sensitivity to certain smells, I also had sudden and pretty violent nausea today and didn’t feel better even after vomiting,” Kurt explained succinctly staring straight ahead at the door in front of him, avoiding the doctor’s eyes.
“But you haven’t thrown up before today?” the doctor asked curious.
“No not really, maybe a little bit but I would put that down more to the sensitivity to smells than real nausea,”
“Okay, it sounds like it could just be a bug, maybe bacterial maybe a virus; I’d like to get some tests in though. I’m just going to draw some blood and the rapid results should be just about fifteen minutes away, we’ll do some more through tests that we’ll call you in a couple of days with but I’d like you to wait until we have the rapid results, okay?”
“Okay,” Kurt sighed and prepared himself to be stuck with a giant needle. Kurt wasn’t scared of needles exactly it just took him a while to accept that his blood did actually need to leave his body. It was over fairly quickly though and after the doctor had taken three vials of his blood she quickly left and promised to give them the results in a few minutes. Looking over to his boyfriend sitting on a small chair in the corner of the room Kurt couldn’t help but smile at the green look on his face, “You’ve been awfully quiet, scared of needles?”
“It’s not the needle that scares me it’s the blood leaving my boyfriend’s body that does it,” Dave mumbled looking down at his shoes.
“I’ll be fine, a few drops of blood isn’t going to kill me,” Kurt smiled again feeling the worry about prom and even the nausea itself wane a bit at the words from Dave’s mouth.
“I know but it’s still not my favorite thing in the world,” Dave said leaning forward in the chair to smooth a piece of Kurt’s hair back into place. “Do you still want ice cream after this?”
“Frozen Yogurt Dave, and yes I do. You know how much I love my pomegranate and almond mix,” Kurt began to salivate just at the thought of it. It would do wonders, if only to make him more comfortable and happy.
“I know,” Dave said looking up into Kurt’s face smiling for the first time since he’d heard the news from Azimo after fourth hour. “After we go tell your dad whatever’s wrong with you we’ll get some and I’ll let you try and explain Inception to me again.”
“You just want to watch Joseph Gordon-Levitt in those suits again,” Kurt accused happily leaning over and giving Dave a quick kiss.
“You should wear suits more often,” Dave said wistfully kissing the side of Kurt’s neck in return.
“Mmmm, I think you’re right, I just got those new skinny ties didn’t I?” Kurt replies with a glint in his eyes that reminds Dave of just what those ties had been used for not too long ago.
“I don’t know, you might have to remind me which ones you mean, you’ve got a lot of clothes,” Dave teased going to bite Kurt’s earlobe when they both heard the sound of the doorknob opening slowly. Sitting himself back into the chair he’d somehow risen from, Dave attempted to appear innocent and decidedly unlike someone who was about to do things to his boyfriend in a doctor’s office that probably were not doctor recommended.
“Kurt?” The doctor called stepping into the room with a folder in her hands, “Kurt I’m afraid I’ll need to speak to you alone.”
Dave looked hesitantly at the doctor then Kurt and back before rising from his chair and exiting the room, “I’ll wait in the lobby for you,”
“Kurt, I’m afraid we have some rather odd test results here that could mean one of two things. Option A can be easily ruled out with a few questions. Do you take a fish oil supplement?”
“No, I told the nurse I don’t take anything,”
“I know, sometimes people don’t think of vitamins when we ask about what you’re taking. Have you had sex with a woman in the past…”
“I’ve never had sex with anyone but Dave and he’s only had sex with me,” Kurt answered cutting of the doctor with a worried tone. Whatever was wrong with him was obviously very serious if the doctor was asking him questions about his sex life and forcing Dave out of the room.
“Well then I have some rather serious news for you,” The doctor said looking hesitant to even say what she was about to “Kurt, you’re pregnant,”
---___---
Back in the car Kurt still couldn’t keep his hands from shaking. The news that Dave and him had made a baby was a thrilling thought, but he couldn’t keep all of the doubts and fears from invading his mind. What would they do with a baby so soon after graduating high school? How would they do all those wonderful, beautiful things they had planned over the past year? Would Dave even want a baby so soon? They’d talked about kids in the very far future and agreed that they both wanted some, but Kurt would be having this baby in just about eight months, just after their first semester in college; too soon for a kid. Kurt was almost scared enough to tell Dave that he did have the stomach flu after all and figure out what to do from there, but if there was one thing that Burt Hummel had taught his son was that you’re always honest with those that you love.
“What is it Kurt?” Dave asked quietly fidgeting with Kurt’s keys nervously, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing’s wrong Dave, I’ve just got some really big news” Kurt said taking in a deep breath in preparation for what he was about to say, “I’m pregnant”
Kurt could not prepare himself for the wide grin that spread itself across his boyfriend’s face at hearing the news of their baby. Kurt was relieved that Dave’s first reaction was happiness; it meant so much that Dave took this as happy news.
“You’re pregnant?” Dave murmured a grin still plastered on his face. “How is that possible? I thought you said…”
“I know, I thought it wasn’t possible but the doctors said that the tests were still only 97 percent accurate when we were born, apparently my test was wrong. I can have children…we can have children,” Kurt said guiding Dave’s hand to his stomach grinning with his boyfriend at the news. Finally, as Dave rubbed the still smooth surface of Kurt’s stomach, Kurt allowed himself to stop all the thoughts of what they would do and how they could support a baby and just let himself be happy.
“This is amazing,” Dave said grabbing Kurt’s face with the hand, that wasn’t still busy feeling where his baby was growing, and kissed his boyfriend. “Our baby is going to be amazing. You are amazing.”
“I’m going to get fat you know,” Kurt laughed at the sheer joy that was radiating from his boyfriend and kissing him back. “Which I think we should get started on, I need fro yo and a lot of it. I’m snacking for two now.”
“Anything you want baby, anything you want,” Dave laughed turning over the engine and pulling away from the clinic keeping his hand on Kurt all the way.
