Bananas In Pajamas!

Hello, my darling internet people. It's hello-goodbye, like that song from The Sound of Music. Or was that from the Sound of Music? I must confess that I basically only remember the "hello-goodby" part, but it conjures up visions of blond children all dressed alike singing in a line, so I'm going to claim Sound of Music-ness. This is all by way of saying that I came back and am going away again tomorrow morning, headed for a five-day vacation with the family at the beach. Long-time readers of this journal will remember this period of silence fondly from last year (brief mentions at the beginning of this entry as well, for the deeply interested among you). And now, to continue the historical record, I present my summer beach reading list:

Black Powder War by Naomi Novik. Yes, I did start reading this ages ago. I got distracted, silly me. What better time than the beach to get back in the swing of things and read that last fifty pages?

Living Next Door To The God Of Love by Justina Robson. Looked interesting in the bookstore, adequately (perhaps even spectacularly, jury's still out) well written, cool title. Seems to involve superheroes in some awesome meta way?

The Best American Travel Writing. I. I really can't explain this one. Sometimes I like weird stuff. One might even call that a dominant character trait.

For Whom The Bell Tolls, by Ernest Hemingway. I still have my bookmark in it from last year! They were...somewhere in the mountains of Spain? Falling in love and getting ready to blow up a bridge? And there was something in there about bull-riders? Yeah, okay.

The Oracle's Queen, by Lynn Flewelling. I've been waiting for this book for quite a while. The final book in the trilogy that started with The Bone Doll's Twin. Genderfuck in a cool way. I hope she finishes it with as much confidence and skill as she started out. Been a while since I read the first two, though, and I seem to have lent out my copies, so I couldn't refresh my memory. I may not get around to reading this one.

Transforming Matter: A History of Chemistry from Alchemy to the Buckyball, by Trevor H. Levere. Hooray science! Given to me by a friend, haven't read it yet but have been meaning to. It's thin? Dude, it has a chapter titled, "The Rise of Organic Chemistry." How awesome is that? I am completely serious.

I, Robot, by Isaac Asimov. I really, honestly, have never read this book. How is that possible?

Cryptonomicon, by Neal Stephenson. I also haven't read this one. Mm. Yeah, I can't explain it.

So, that'll keep me busy and out of trouble.

In other news, yesterday I got to meet the wonderful and amazing callsigns, whereupon we made the hilarious discovery that Jessa had gone to high school with my older sister, who happens to look startlingly like me. Or maybe I look a lot like her. Whatever. Jessa gave us our much-beloved Mercedes Lackey filk tapes. Jessa! You were part of our life and you/we didn't even know it! We too used to watch Sailor Moon and the Bananas in Pajamas commercials at 6am every weekday morning. I watched you perform in amateur high school theater productions! Weren't you a nurse in "The Relapse," or whatever that weird play with the doctor was about?

Aaaanyway, callsigns, meet aweirdsister. aweirdsister, meet callsigns.

And now, with the strains of "it's a small world after all," running through my head, I must call it a night. Catch you all in a week!
