Farewell and godspeed, my lovely Charlie

Jun 30, 2014 17:01

My great, proud, adventurous and much loved Charlie Cat has embarked on his last journey today. He was rather poorly on New Year's Eve, and we told him he had to stick around for at least another six months, and he did, to the day. And he was quite well until last Thursday, roaming the garden, enjoying the sunshine and bothering various insects.

But today he was tired and had enough, and he died in his sleep peacefully, surrounded by his fellow cats, myself and Mrs. C - no pain, no vet, no stress. A dignified death after a long, dignified life, which he luckily shared with us.

I'll miss him terribly; he was so very much the heart of this little family. We're all incredibly sad, but also grateful that he was, against all odds, with us for so many years, and was granted such a peaceful departure. It's comforting to know that e's now re-united with his beloved Bounce and dearest Emma, and that he can roam endless fields and meadows on four healthy legs for all eternity.

Charlie's last picture, from Thursday.

Pablo, my dear social worker, was looking after Charlie all the time. He cleaned him and checked on him every half hour. It's rare to experience such friendship among cats. But then Charlie touched the hearts of all he met, be it human or cat.

Charlie has inspired so many stories, and now his own has come to an end. But it was a good story, and a good life, and once we stop crying our eyes out, we can look back at all the wonderful moments and memories he shared with us. One day we will. But not today.
