Ignore the horror, analyse the trivial

I've just read the news about the shooting in Aurora/Colorado. It's absolutely shocking; I sit here and wonder how anybody could do such a thing. You read about it and watch it on TV and despite thousands of experts' comments which will flood the media within the next weeks, one simply can't understand it ( Read more... )

wtf, news

Sort of shock reaction? Or just some people want to show how terribly oh-so-concerned and 'why-nobody-said-it-yet' and original they are. In the course of years I keep noticing how terribly annoying are !Concerned! people. Not just concerned, but !Concerned!. Is there any competition for this or what? The Golden Cup for the Best Hair-Splitter and Witch Hunter? And if such !Concerned! attitude pisses off me, who always tells "yes, but" and "there's no black and white cases", then it must be really pissing off and simply awful...

As for the matter, I reacted in somewhat snail's way, "Where's my shell!!! Aaaa, why there's no end to this, why, why again! Never more, pleeease!"

They all just wanted a nice evening, and looked forward it for days and months before, they just lived their lives as everyday, planning the next days and years, and probably even reviews of this damned movie...

Well, I'm just glad editorialists get to write about the parallels between the movie and this shooting, and trying to connect the latter with the former. It'd be a damn shame, I mean, if he'd opened fire during "My Little Pony" or something - what a lost opportunity that would have been!

Nope, there's no such thing like a lost opportunity. "Subliminal stimuli in MLP triggers a massacre!" "Psychic movie reviewer gets one fluffy movie too much, and switches from words to bullets!"

Then of course, we'd have to have essay upon essay on the feminization of American culture by pulling the Bronies in for critique and examination, and examining what weakened the underpinnings of masculine culture. And this would be why the shooter snapped, naturally, over MLP.

Senseless violence doesn't need inspiration; it only wants for opportunity.

it's nothing but victim blaming.

I hate those who blame victims with a passion. The weak among us who wring their hands and seek to understand the murderer's motives, thereby somewhat excusing their actions, continue the harm the killer has done and shame the rest of society. Explaining likely influences about why the murderer killed and offering excuses for their behaviour does not help the victims and has the effect of negating the viciousness of what has happened to them. There is too much of that in our PC society.

I think one of the worst things to happen to public discourse occurred right after 9/11 when news coverage went 24/7 everywhere. They have to drag every speculating "expert" they can find in front of the cameras to fill air time, and thus allow them to go on and on about whatever idiotic crap pops in their heads. Ugh.

My personal feeling is they are afraid to face the events. It's easier to find an ivory tower to scramble onto and pretend somehow the victims brought it on themselves than face the idea that someone might just randomly kill them for no understandable reason. We all like to pretend we are in control of our world, but there are sharks in the water, and the water is murky.
