I've always been opposed to LJ charging for user-created content. For one, LJ wouldn't exist if we wouldn't provide content, and for the other - why would I want LJ to profit off my writing?
However, I like the plans to give users the possibility to make money with their own content. I don't like ads, and my own LJ is ads free, but if somebody wants to put ads in their own entries and make a bit of money when people click the sponsors, that's fine for me.
The new "Pay Per View" option which will become available from June for those of us with a permanent or a paid account takes things a step further, though. You'll be able to label each entry as "free" or "PPV"; if it's the latter, people will have to pay to read what you've written. I don't know yet if there will be a fixed fee, if there's a limit for what you can charge, what the payment options are etc., but while I was "d'oh?" at first, I've warmed up to the idea. I don't expect to become rich on LJ, but who knows, maybe I could make a bit of extra dough?
So here's my (rough draft) of a payment model for "Joyful Molly". This is the result of overnight-brainstorming, so please feel free to yay or nay at your heart's delight:
Free
- All private entries (who'd pay for reading my whining, anyway!)
- Fanfic
- Resource links
- Politics, entertainment etc.
- Screencaps, low resolution
PPV normal (minimum fee possible)
- Book reviews
- DVD reviews
- Screencaps, high resolution
- Fannish meta
PPV de luxe (higher fee, depending on content)
- Original writing
- In-depth articles with pictures etc.
- Travel reports
- Screencaps of Andrew Buchan, James D'Arcy or Jack Davenport sans shirt (HD)
Your thoughts? And what would you consider "fair" payment?
