Z's class at preschool is doing an ongoing project to investigate food production. This has included all the usual stuff like cooking and planting a vegetable garden, and a few more unusual activities such as using a food dehydrator and a tortilla maker. Last week, the class toured Los Amigos tortilla factory. Can you think of anything better than a dozen preschoolers in a loud room full of heavy machinery? No, me neither.
Actually, it was pretty cool. Z's fascination with contraptions kept him spellbound by the giant conveyor belts and other machines. The employees, having been warned in advance of the onslaught, tolerated us with good humor. We even briefly added another food to Z's menu. (That didn't last long--the power of novelty compelled him to try some tortillas, but I can't coax them into his mouth now. Typical.)
There aren't many pictures here, but be sure and click through the series to read the Z-quotes I captured on my phone's recorder. Transcribing what the children say as they go through their day is part of the preschool's way of not only communicating with parents, but of capturing the kids' thought processes about what they're seeing and doing. I love seeing how Z connects ideas in his mind.
