The Ubuntu updates I got this morning appear to be in working order. Firefox is more streamline than ever--even my Littlefox extension fits in the bar better. Oh, you computer gurus, you! And HAL was updated a few days ago, I guess, because my battery icon in the system tray gives me an accurate reading. Mostly accurate, anyway. I think I get significantly more battery life using Ubuntu than I did with Windows XP but I haven't a chance to test that theory out.
