I went and saw Book of Eli tonight. It's a good movie, but kind of strange. It's pretty religious. And would be more so if it weren't for the fact that Denzel kills like 30 dudes and the bad language. I dug it because I'm a sucker for Denzel. I like just about anything he's in. Esp. if he gets to be a badass in it and this is one of his more ( Read more... )

Ah, Man on Fire. One of the best movies of the last ten years or so. Starts out as one type of movie, turns into a complete different beast halfway through. So, so, SO good. I can find no fault at all with it.
And yep, it's because of my love of Man on Fire, and Denzel, that I want to see Book of Eli. The religious stuff just maakes me want to see it more. Don't even care if it's preachy.

Still say you're missing the boat on Blackest Night, but this is coming from someone who hasn't read a new issue of that stuff in several weeks.

Japanese horror can be great. Oldboy -- fantastic. If you can call it horror. It's horrific, but I dunno if it's really horror. Battle Royale. Same. That stuff... awesome. Other stuff... I have a hard time with that.

Eli's not preachy at all actually. Depending on how you want to take it, it can even been seen as anti-preachy. Man on Fire is in my top 5 Denzel movies of all time. You should watch Devil in a Blue Dress if you haven't seen it.

I've read a couple of the Blackest Night issues and it's good, but just doesn't work for me. Probably because I have no knowledge of anything GL since the Hal-redemption. Rayner (or Stewart!) 4 life. I'm sure I'll catch it in trade form.

I wouldn't call Oldboy or Battle Royale horror, more like psychological dramas. I was watching Audition at the time. J-Horror is like hearing a radically different cover of your favorite song. The music is all there, but the beats are just off. It still may work, but I have to look at it a whole different way.
