I am a broadcast news producer / reporter (mostly producer). I have moved to market 160 for my husband's new job. I am currently a SAHM to my 22-month-old twins. I have the opportunity to anchor the weekend newscast here. For $10 an hour ( Read more... )

you know, I was trained as a journalist (Ryerson in Toronto). I got into desktop publishing at the start of my career, though, and sucked into web developing since 1996. I recently took a job at a non-profit organization, and they were *embarrassed* that they could only offer me $15 an hour on this contract (I like working for non-profits).

But seriously. They were embarrassed at what they offered, and apologized. That station should *totally* be blushing to their toes.

For $10 an hour?

I don't know what going rate is in that area... but no, I wouldn't do it. I'd be afraid that when you take something that low, you're going to get a reputation as always being willing to go that low.

It is less than half of what I was making back home and I haven't made that little since my very first news writing job.

Woah, slow down there. Before you decide whether to take the crappy money, have you found out if there's any chance of raising it? Ask that question first.

For real. I'd try to negotiate first; if they're unwilling to budge, walk. Given your background, it sounds like you can afford to hold out for something better.
