I suppose it depends on how much you love it. Is $10/hr really worth the amount of time you'd put into it, and if so, would you love going to work everyday?
Against the recommendations of my advisers and professors in college, I took 2 unpaid internships. Did I work as hard (if not harder) as paid reporters? Yes. Did I have to clean out my savings to be able to eat and pay rent during the summer? Yes. Did I love it and get more out of it than I would having a paid internship with CNN where I'd just bring the Web producers coffee? Damn straight.
I do understand this is different than getting your feet wet and trying to gain experience as a young journalist... you've already been down that road I'm sure. I do think that the value of your happiness and fulfillment still outweighs how much you make, though. If you can pay the bills, and have a job you can't wait to rush out the door to each morning, that is success in my book. I'd rather have that than a six-figure salary at a job I hate.
Good luck with your decision. I know it's a tough one :(
