Chapter Two

Ana was working a double shift again at the diner. She hated working there but it was a job. It got her paid steadily. Better than the whole acting gig she'd tried. Her Mom was right about LA though. Everybody wants to be a star, so what was the point of trying to be one? She might as well just live, and be happy with that.

She had been so caught-up in her thoughts that night, and so completely exhausted, that she ended up dropping two coffee mugs and a plate. They both ended with a smash, clatter, and then a screaming boss closely behind.

"Pick these up! What's wrong with you Ana?! Those are coming out of your damn paycheck!" he said gruffly as he waddled off.

"Stupid fat oaf" she mumbled. "I'll take it out of your paycheck" she growled in a mocking tone.

She went and got a broom to start sweeping up the remnants of the most recently smashed plate. Passing a very tall, handsome man in a nice suit, she bent down towards him and said "I'll be right with you, sir. I just have to go clean this up."

"That's quite alright." Marcus looked at the young woman with interest. She was attractive, and there was something about her that drew him in, something he hadn't seen in years. Despite her worldly appearance, he sensed that underneath all that was something much better.

Pure, unadulterated innocence.

He leaned back, a wicked smirk on his face. This was going to be fun.

Ana was pleased to have such a forgiving customer. Most of them started huffing about her being lazy or stupid. But he seemed gentle.. sweet even.

She had to admit that she was very attracted to him. He had a chiseled jawline, beautiful eyes, and a sweet smile. And of course, he was obviously a business man.

She quickly cleaned the plate, and went back to his table. "What can I get for you?" she said with her most flirtatious smile, and sweetest tone.

Too easy. Marcus contemplated his response. Judging from the way she was looking at him, she was more than interested. She didn't know she was way out of her league.

Sadly, Marcus thought with a glance at his watch, it would have to wait. He'd have to choose between entertaining himself with the lovely waitress or attending the meeting with the Reza clan, and since the latter had talons for fingers and short tempers, the choice was an easy one.

He wanted to go slow with this one anyway, to savor every step. Who knew, perhaps he could fit her into one of Wolfram & Hart's grander schemes.

Pasting his most charming smile onto his face, he leaned forward, pretending he was just reading her name off her name tag. "Well, Ana, I'd love a cup of coffee and a muffin." When he saw her face fall slightly, he shot her a sympathetic smile. "Boss is waiting. You know how they get."

"Oh, of course." she took a glance over at her boss, still waddling around the diner. "I know how bosses are." she smiled sweetly.

"Do you need these to go, or are you going to be eating them here?" she said, hoping she didn't sound too eager that he'd stay. He obviously had somewhere to go, but she was enjoying his charm.

She warned herself not to get too close. She'd been down that road before, and ended up with a work-a-holic jerk who wanted her as arm candy. He couldn't be like that, she thought to herself as she tried to read his face for an indication that he was as into her as she was him.

"I'll have them here, please." Charmed by her eager expression and sweet smile, Marcus decided the Reza clan could wait for five minutes. "If they're any good, I might come back tomorrow," he teased, satisfied when she blushed.

He ate leisurely, every now and then tossing a casual glance at her. She pretended not to be watching him, which was good. It only added spice to the game. Polishing off the last muffin, he left a generous tip on the table and headed for the exit, shrugging on his suit jacket as he went.

Ana watched him as he ate, trying to be covert about it, but failing miserably. She was intrigued. She'd never seen someone as professional looking as him in her diner. She grinned when she saw the tip he left, and pocketed it quickly before the boss could see it. The rest of her shift, she thought about Mr. Tall, Dark and Mysterious. Hoping the muffin was good enough for him to come back tomorrow.
