I published my first story in English language a few days ago (I will put it here, after challenge ends, which should be today or tomorrow (I am still confused by time zones)). It was an interesting experience for a lot of reasons.
First - I am really able to write in English, but not able to copy a word from a dictionary properly. There was one moment, when I made a mistake and part of the story change meaning (or it could be spell check devil, I am not sure). Conclusion -
e_danae (beta-read, by the way) is genius.
Second - I am not stupid enough to believe that I am able to write in proper, mistakes-free, beautiful English. No way (I am grammatical idiot even in Czech, ask my betas). So, I decided play dirty. There is Czech character in SGA (in case you don't know), so why he cannot have a daughter? Czech girl exactly like me? Making same mistakes as me? Writing a letter? I had a great time playing this trick (and now I have even dirtier in my head). It was real challenge.
Third - In one moment I hated it. I had head full of ideas and there was no way, how to do it! And no feedback in my own perception of the story. Danae was great, but she also isn't native english speaker, so we both were blind (I want english beta as christmas present, please!).
Fourth - There is a big difference between Czech and English fandom. Not even in number of people, but they also aren't afraid of commenting. I received so much so kind comments (thank you, people). It is probably little childish, but I love comments. Good ones as much as bad ones (clever ones in this case, I really don't know, what I am supposed to do with "no soul" comment, but its important for me to know, that there is confusing moment in the story, or something like this). I am always jittery about comments. There is one point in time (directly after story publishing), when my brain makes "click" and refuses any information about quality of the story. It usually takes one or two comment to calm me down, so it was great to have it in such a short time.
Fifth - Joining a new community is always type of an adrenaline sport and to be honest, I like small amount of adrenaline sometimes.
